When the team later chose Manziel, the pressure was at least somewhat taken off Gilbert.
"He's on the learning curve," Pettine said. "He's kind of put himself in situations where he's testing his ability to make up (speed). I think a lot of corners, I don't want to say play scared, but they'll stay on top and they get beat underneath a lot. I think the elite guys will let a guy get slightly past them but will make up speed and they can still make a play on the ball."
NOTES: Browns NT Phil Taylor and OG Garrett Gilkey got into a fight that went beyond the usual pushing and shoving. Gilkey's helmet was ripped off as he threw uppercuts and Taylor pushed WR Miles Austin aside as he tried to get at his teammate. Pettine wasn't pleased. "I always use the phrase 'competitive not combative' and that line gets crossed every now and again," he said. "But I also think that's a byproduct of what we're trying to build, the mentality. It's something that happens. As a coach you frown on it but at the same time you understand it might be the price of doing business." ... Pro Bowl WR Josh Gordon was kept out of practice with "a minor ding." Pettine said Gordon's lack of activity has nothing to do with a possible league drug suspension. ... Pro Bowl T Joe Thomas didn't practice because of an unspecified injury.
"Any little mess ups I have or things that would give a bad name for myself, then yes, he'll pull me to the side and explain everything to me," Gilbert said.
