The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) has no plans to mobilise nurses of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to engage strike action.This disclosure was made on Thursday by General Secretary of the union, Ms Chandrawattie Persaud, in wake of an article published recently in this newspaper.The report stated that because of payment concerns, nurses of that public institution were planning a major strike action.But, according to Persaud, this could not be the case, since any such action must first be initialised by the union.“I read the article about the nurses at the GPHC and some proposed action that they are embarking on in terms of taking industrial action. I was very appalled, because we are in regular and constant contact with the nurses there, and such a matter would have definitely been brought to our attention.”Persaud explained that because the union has nursing officials who are active union representatives, any concerns that nurses have are usually brought to the attention of the union. She added, too, that there was no complaint brought to the union about any issue confronting the nurses which could warrant industrial action.According to her, at no point was the union contacted in this regard, thus the urgency to clear the air on the matter.Persaud speculated, though, that there may be some nurses who have their own specific concerns and might have raised same in some quarters. They, however, have so far failed to make a formal complaint to the union through its representatives, the General Secretary noted.“The union would not act on hearsay; people may have issues, but they have not raised them. The union has a procedure whereby a complaint must first be made, and investigation ensues before any further action is taken.”Persaud said that, as far as she is aware, the nurses were in receipt of two five per cent increases, and those who earn below $50,000 were given a $4,000 addition to their salaries, which was expected to serve as cost-of-living relief.However, according to reports, the nurses were disheartened that the additional payment they had received was not retroactive, thus causing them to raise their concerns.Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Mr Michael Khan, had sought to explain that the nurses had in fact failed to understand that there were no plans by the Government to offer them a retroactive package for nurses who earned below $50,000.Persaud pointed out that, had the concerns raised impacted significantly on the nurses, there is no doubt that the matter would have been engaging the attention of the union.She noted,Adidas Hockey Jerseys Cheap, though, that the only concern that could have arisen was if the nurses had not received the expected package that was promised, a development that has not occurred.
