–domestic-related and disorderly killings upThere has been a drastic increase in domestic-related and disorderly murders within the past ten months, but execution-style killings and murders committed during armed robberies have dropped significantly.According to statistics released by the Guyana Police Force, 113 people were murdered between January and October 31, this year. There were 115 murders during the same period last year.Of the 113 murders this year, 44 were of the disorderly type; 23 were domestic related; 19 occurred during armed robberies and five were execution-style killings.While the statistics show an increase of 21 percent in domestic related murders and 19 percent in disorderly murders,Air Max 95 Black Leather, there has been a 58 percent decrease in execution-style murders and a10 percent decrease in murders during armed robberies.But cases of robbery under arms have increased by 14 percent with 717 reports up to October 31 this year in comparison to 627 for the same period last year.The statistics indicate a four percent increase in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms, and a 42 percent increase in armed robberies where instruments other than firearms were used by the perpetrators.In relation to traffic, there have been 98 road deaths up to the end of October this year in comparison to 103 for the same period in 2010; representing a five percent decrease.However, 10 children have lost their lives so far this year in traffic accidents, compared to six for the same period last year. Thirty-six pedestrians and 18 pedal cyclists respectively were killed within the past ten months.To date, four more persons have lost their lives in November 2011 in accidents which occurred at De Willem, West Coast Demerara; Mandela Avenue, Georgetown; and Houston Public Road, East Bank Demerara.According to police, speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol are the major causes of these fatal accidents.A statement from the Police Public Relations Department added that the Force is maintaining its rigid enforcement towards road safety along with the use of breathalysers and radar guns and traffic education.At the end of October, police made a total of 52,368 cases against errant motorists. Of this total 10,487 were for speeding and 919 for driving under the influence of alcohol.National Road Safety Month is being observed this month under the theme “Drive wise and save lives”. During this period a number of activities have been planned by the Guyana Police Force, the National Road Safety Council and the Ministry of Home Affairs.These include live call-in media programmes, road safety talks through the media, distribution of flyers countrywide; lectures at schools; enhancing school road safety patrols; refurbishing of road markings and repainting of pedestrian crossings; seminars for drivers of public transportation, and a one-day mini exhibition and symposium for schools at the National Stadium. |
