The new fare scheme implemented and endorsed by the Guyana Public Transportation Association (GPTA) and the General Minibus Association of Guyana (GMAG) yesterday attracted silence from the Minister of Tourism, Commerce and Industry, Manniram Prashad. When questioned concerning the increase, the Minister said,Cheap Jerseys, “I don’t know anything about the fare increase.”He, however, noted that his Ministry was in discussion with the GPTA about the increase and during the course of the discussion, the GPTA went ahead and increased the tariff.Earlier in the year, Prashad had said that once the price of gasoline went over $1000, there would be a minibus fare increase. Currently, the average price of gasoline is $1044.23 per gallon. However, when questioned about how the Ministry intends to deal with the situation, the Minister could not furnish an answer. However, Nicholas Nnami, President of the GPTA, said that the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Commerce had apparently been made aware of the move by the GPTA to increase the minibus fare.According to Nnami, the GPTA met with the Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad, and informed him of their move, after presenting him with the relevant documents and paperwork. The Minister was apparently given a deadline of Thursday 3 July, 2008 by which to respond and make contact with the GPTA. Nnami said that no contact was made by the Minister with the GPTA, and as such the GPTA went ahead with the fare increase. |
