Murder Accused Michael Powley told the court yesterday that he is innocent of the crime for which he is indicted.Murder Accused: Michael Powley“I am innocent of this crime sir. I didn’t kill Buddy. The victim purportedly died while receiving medical attention at the institution.Reports indicated that the incident stemmed from a disagreement between the two, over a cooking gas cylinder.The accused is currently on trial before Justice James Bovell-Drakes and a mixed 12-member jury at the High Court in Georgetown. Powley was called upon to lead his defence yesterday after a no-case submission, which was presented by his attorney Basil Williams was overruled.Powley recounted that on the June 8, 2012, he was at his residence when he heard his neighbour (Narine) “cussing.”The man told the court that he peeped through a fence and saw his neighbour holding on to his wife‘s clothing.He said that his neighbour had bottles in his hand and had threatened to harm his wife. Powley related that he told Narine to leave his wife alone, but he in turn said “come yuh mother so and so. I gun chop you up today, is you me want.”  The accused said that as he advanced towards the man in an attempt to rescue his wife, he (Powley) picked up a piece of wood.He recalled that “Buddy chuck meh wife down pun the ground and attack me.” The accused said that it was raining and the place was muddy and so he slipped and fell.“Me fall down and he come towards me and we start fight. I look up and three of he friends dem de coming they say we gun chop he up and kill he today,” Powley said in conclusion of his testimony with regard to the killing, before the matter was adjourned .  His case is set for next Wednesday for closing addresses to be made the attorneys involved in the case.On Tuesday, State Prosecutors Natasha Backer and Narissa Leander called their final witness to the stand before closing their case.  Seven witnesses have testified in the matter that commenced on February 22 last.
