A team of doctors attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), recently returned from Grenada after representing Guyana at the 60th Annual Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) Research Conference.At the forum,Jose Calderon Jersey, GPHC’s Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr. Jorge Tomas Balseiro Estevez and Dr. Indhira Harry presented a paper titled, “Profile of suicidal behaviour in Guyana: A retrospective from 2010 to 2012,” which was received with keen attention.The main objective of the conference was to share experiences and engage in discussions surrounding the theme of the event; “Violence and Injuries: An Urgent Public Health and Development Issue.”The team from Guyana benefited significantly from the active participation and discussions at the scientific conference and as such, they will now transmit the knowledge and new experiences acquired and apply it to fit Guyana’s health care system.This activity highlights the GPHC’s continued emphasis and support of research and other scientific methods among its professionals.The CARPHA Conference is the largest health research conference in the English-speaking Caribbean. Participants usually comprise researchers, policy makers and health care providers. The CARPHA is a merger of five previous regional health institutions (RHIs) namely the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC), Caribbean Health Research Council (CHRC), Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI), Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) and the Caribbean Research Drug Testing Laboratory (CRDTL).Next year’s CARPHA Conference will be held in the Turks and Caicos.
