By Feona MorrisonAt the conclusion of a nine-month trial, the first conviction this year for the offence of causing death byWinston Cramerdangerous driving was handed down last Wednesday, by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.Winston Cramer, 51, of Lot 162 Go Slow Avenue, Tucville Georgetown was found guilty of causing the death of Lennox Allicock by dangerous driving. On April 10, 2015 Cramer drove motorcar PKK 7896 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Allicock, who was a pedal cyclist at the time.Although the Magistrate found him guilty of the offence, she deferred sentencing to January 28, pending the findings of a probation report.According to facts presented in court, on the day in question, around 16:00 hours, Cramer was proceeding east along Quamina Street, and failed to stop at the intersection at Camp Street. Motorcar PKK 3178 drove into Cramer’s path and resulted in a collision.Allicock, who was on the northern side of Quamina Street, was struck down. Two other persons who were with him received injuries. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he succumbed to his injuries a few days later.Attorney, Adrian Thompson, represented Cramer throughout the trial and secured bail for him in the sum of $150,000.Convictions for 2015Motorists found liable of causing the death of pedestrians by dangerous driving continue to face the full brunt of the law. Such cases concluded at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts as well as the Providence Magistrate’s Court.Prominent city jeweler, Bishnarine ‘Sanjay’ Persaud, was jailed for 58 months, after he was found guilty on a charge of causing death by dangerous drivingOn September 10, 2014 at Lamaha Street, Newton, Georgetown, Persaud of Lot 26 Sheriff Street, Campbellville, Georgetown drove motorcar PKK 5051, in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of former Mayor and City Council worker, Leon Hunte, 55 of Stone Avenue, Blygezigt.Ritesh BhagwandinThe businessman has since been released on $500,000 bail after his Attorney Glenn Hanoman appealed the jail sentence in the High Court.In another case, 20 year-old Ritesh Bhagwandin of Lot 12 Hope, East Coast Demerara was jailed for a total of 20 years after he was found guilty on four counts causing death by dangerous driving.On October 18, 2013, at Coverden Public Road, EBD, Bhagwandin drove motor lorry GPP 8495 in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the deaths of four persons- Felix Marc, Delroy Evans, Loretta Evans and Poolmattie Samaroo.A five-year jail sentence was imposed for each count in the Providence court. However, the prison terms will run concurrently.Shawn Ravindra Ramai, 28 of Lot 15 Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, was found guilty as charged for this same offence. He drove motor pick up PRR 2923 in a manner dangerous to the public on February 26, 2014 and caused the death of Claude McPherson, a pedal cyclist.Also, Sophia bus driver, Paul John, 35, of North Sophia, was jailed for 58 months after being found guilty of causing the death of four-year-old Jayden Charles by dangerous driving.Charles, a former student of Starter’s Nursery was struck down and killed by a speeding minibus, drivenDEAD: Felix Marcby John. The accident occurred on April, 4 at Water Street, Georgetown, in the vicinity of Giftland Office Max.There were several other convictions with matters of this nature still pending.A total of 100 fatal accidents were recorded for the previous year. This resulted in the demise of 118 persons. Among the highest number fatalities for 2015 were pedestrians who numbered 41; followed by passengers of private motor vehicles and hire cars, 23; pillion riders, 17, motorcyclists, 16; and pedal cyclists 11.The month of November 2015, was categorized as the deadliest for road users. It was in this same month that Guyana commenced its observance of Road Safety Month.Over 40,000 traffic offences were recorded in 2015. Speeding turned out to be the leading offence and cause of road accidents. This was followed by inattentiveness, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to conform to road signs, error of judgment among others.At a press conference held by the Guyana National Road Safety Council (GNRSC) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) at Traffic Headquarters Eve Leary,NFL Jerseys China, last month Traffic Chief Dion Moore had stated that as part of the strategy to minimize accidents and fatalities, the GPF has embarked on a mission to improve the learner/driver’s programme.
