Despite a plea to Magistrate Melissa Robertson and an explanation that she was frustrated about being abused by her partner, 23-year-old Lindany Phillips, who claims to be an “active member” of the Guyana Defence Force, was remanded on a charge of unlawful wounding. It is alleged that on June 2, at Meadow Bank, East Bank Demerara, Phillips unlawfully wounded Carl Ally, causing him actual bodily harm. The charge was indictable and Phillips was not required to plead.Phillips told the court that her actions were not intentional, but in self-defence. She claimed that she was a victim of constant abuse from the virtual complainant with whom she shared a relationship.Fighting to hold back tears, Phillips said that Ally who was her boyfriend was always in the habit of beating her.She added that on the night in question he visited her apartment at Meadow Bank and she indicated to him that she wanted to end the relationship. This, Phillips said, angered him and they ended up in a heated argument, which led to a scuffle between them.“My Worship, he hold a screw driver to my neck while in the kitchen and I had no choice but to grab the knife to scare him off. I wasn’t going to stab him…I knew what I was doing but it wasn’t my intention to stab him,” Phillips lamented.Meanwhile at the end of her statement when the Magistrate asked if she was employed Phillips told the court that she was a solider with the Guyana Defence Force. When asked to explain, she said up to a month and a half ago she was fully employed, but now she does voluntary work for them. However police prosecutor Denise Griffith objected to bail, since the virtual complainant is still hospitalised in a critical but stable condition. The prosecutor also told the court that what was said by the accused in court as it relates to what transpired the night is not what was written in her statement.“Your Worship, in her statement she even quoted her regulation number and stated that she is a serving member of the Guyana Defence Force,” Griffith said.At that point the accused interjected, noting that as recent as three weeks ago she did some work for the army. She added that she did not make any reports about being abused by the virtual complainant, since they were both army ranks.“Because we were both in the army, I only reported the abuse to a senior officer who told me not to go to the police. The officer used to warn him (the VC),Wholesale Jerseys,” Phillips added.Phillips is expected to make her next court appearance on June 18. |
