Despite heavy showers in the Rupununi,Wholesale Jerseys, El Nino remains unrelenting and continues toThe trees and the water channel have dried up in this photo.bake the savannahs and dry its rivers. The growing heat wave has dwindled the water supply across the Region, leaving the indigenous communities scurrying for water to drink and bathe and plant their vegetation. Their crops have wilted; there are no luscious green leaves anymore; everything has dried up. The savannahs, almost unrecognizable, resemble dry wastelands.Even though the rainy season is expected to start soon, the people are still bracing themselves for a looming food shortage. There were talks to build a store house but if those talks have materialized, no one knows.Information coming out of the Region revealed that the blistering heat is causing cattle to fall dead in the savannahs. The fish are dead or are dying since most of the rivers, lakes and pond have dried out.One Rupununi resident indicated to this newspaper that the waters were disappearing. The severe drought was not only affecting the people but also their livestock, which have gone wandering for the slightest bit of water. The wild animals are doing the opposite, roaming the communities and breaking into the people’s houses. The savannah is a dry wasteland after being hit by El Nino and rapid wild fires.“It’s getting worst here. Every day we wake up and think about how we can find water to bathe or drink. The wells are drying…[The Regional Democratic Council] is bringing in water but how long will they do that for?” the woman said. She said they hope that the rains will be good to them and ease the pressure from the drought. But so far, the few showers they had proved to them that the rain was incapable of offering some respite from the harsh dry weather from 2015.The Rupununi has never been hit by a drought of this magnitude since the first one in 1988 and even then neither the residents nor the government was prepared for it. This heat waves begun early in 2015, and have increased over the past few months. The situation was even declared a state of emergency, promoting the region to start fetching water to the communities after they were struck.El Nino was not confined to the Rupununi. The drought also hit parts of Region One. It was in this same region, in the latter part of last year that was stricken with an outbreak of gastroenteritis.Region Nine Executive Officer, Carl Parker, yesterday stated that the Region was trying its bestThe creek under the Moco Moco Falls is drying up also. The water level was once higher, residents said.to control the situation. He said the region had experienced a few days of rain but it was not enough to change the effects of the emergency.“A lot of communities are still in danger. The rains proved to have little impact on the drought,” he said, but stated that the Guyana Water Incorporated was drilling wells across the Rupununi, mainly in the North Rupununi. The REO lamented that since March, more than 300 students from the Annai dormitory have had to fetch water for miles to drink and to bathe. “It hurts me to see children still fetching water to bathe,” he said.He said a well was drilled at the school which accommodates over 500 children, but it was not replenishing fast enough to meet the demands of the children and their teachers. Parker said this placed a strain on the Region because they were fetching water at $180,000 per week.Nevertheless,Cheap Jerseys Online, the school experienced some relief on Tuesday when a deeper well was dug. The authorities are awaiting a team from GWI to connect the well to the water system. He added that eight wells are being dug in the North Rupununi. These villages are Wowetta, Rupertee, Aranaputa, Kwaimatta, Marcanata, Shulinab, Potarinau and Kumu. Some of the contractors who are working on the project are Andre Webb Drilling Company, S Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Construction Services, C.B. General Contracting Services Inc.,Wholesale NFL Jerseys, Alvin Chowramootoo Construction Services,  R Kissoon Contracting Service, Faldhari Singh and Son Contracting Services, B.K. International, H.J. Contracting Services, Satar Mohamed and Son Construction, Manohar Services,Cheap Jerseys From China, Dresden Geotechnical Services,Cheap Wholesale Jerseys, M. AhmadConstruc-tion, John and John’s Construction and Nabi Construction Inc.Fiscal relief for the emergency has amounted to $8 million. In all, Parker stated, 24 wells will be drilled across the Region to aid the communities stricken by the drought. He noted that a team from the Brazilian Army will arrive on Monday to help construct wells in the South Rupununi.“When El Nino first hit us in 1988 we were not prepared and we were not prepared when it hit us again. It caught us by surprise but now we are taking precautionary steps to better manage the situation if it is to occur again,” he explained. He stated that it is very difficult to find water in the Region since most of the wells have dried up. Depending on the rivers is also a lost cause, since they too have parched or in the process of being dried up completely. He said that the Rupununi River has almost completely dried up. The Kumu Falls has stopped running and the water in the creek at the base of the waterfall is diminishing.Parker explained that approximately 85% of the hand dug wells in the Region were dry, while 50% of those built by GWI have ceased to function properly. The most drought stricken areas are the South Pakaraimas, YorongParu,Wholesale Jerseys From China, Paipang, Taushida, Tiger Pond and Rukumuta, which are all receiving relief from the CDC. The Central Rupununi District is bracing itself for the worst. However, the wells in this district have not completely dried up and so the residents are rationing the water, given its scarcity.Yet, the biggest peril that the drought poses in these villages is crop damage. The communities of Shea, Aishalton, Karaudarnau and Achawib are carefully watching their agricultural crops. The Risk Reduction Management Centre and the CDC have so far provided 450- gallon water tanks and water pumps to assist in the crisis situation. The situation is also being monitored by the Public Health Ministry, which is on high alert for health complications. Livestock and vegetation are also being monitored, while bathing in creeks has become prohibited by the village leaders.El Niño is the natural warming of parts of the Pacific that alters weather worldwide. It occurs every several years and last nearly a year.
