The Police Traffic Department in West Demerara has clamped down on vehicles, especially minibuses, that have breached the traffic laws.More than 20 minibuses were impounded yesterday at the Leonora Police Station for breaching the conditions of their road service licence.Speaking with Kaieteur News, Corporal Roger Ross said that most of the buses were in violation of properly maintaining their vehicles,Cheap Soccer Jerseys, loud music, equipment relating to playing music, and not complying with the certification as it relates to the number plates. Corporal Ross said some buses have stickers on the number plates, which he noted is against the traffic laws.   Some stickers, too, he said, obscure large sections of the windscreen and reduce the visibility of the drivers. Some of the buses had installed music appliances, which will be confiscated; and according to Corporal Ross, some of the drivers have not even taken out the annual motor vehicle licence.  He said that, upon a thorough examination of the vehicles, charges will be instituted against the drivers for the breaches found. The traffic cop said that the campaign will be ongoing for as long as it takes; checks will be done periodically.“Because, you see, if we start today, they will know that every day we will be looking out for them,NHL Jerseys Authentic, so we cannot let them know when we will apprehend them. We will look to see if they change, and if there isn’t any change then we would put the hand on them again,” Corporal Ross said.He explained that the traffic department does not have anything against the writings on the minibuses,Wholesale Jerseys, but these must not be anything vulgar, insensible or discriminatory.   The loud booming of music in the buses is one of the major challenges that the traffic department faces; and according to Ross, the officers are working very hard to curb this problem. While it is against the traffic laws to play loud music in vehicles, some drivers, mostly those in minibuses, still indulge in the practice,Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic, sometimes blaring vulgar music, much to the dissatisfaction of some passengers. Corporal Ross also explained that most of the minibus drivers do not adhere to the speed limit of the roadways. He noted that, on the West Coast of Demerara, people live very close to the roadway,Cheap Jerseys Online, and drivers must take this into consideration and adhere to the speed limit. If they refuse to drive at the required rate, Ross said, they can endanger the lives of those people living close to the roadways. This campaign by the traffic department is a continuation of “Operation Safeway”, which is aimed at reducing road carnage. The campaign was officially launched by Acting Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, on October 23 last year. Some strategies to curb errant road use include the increase in ticketing fines for defaulters, the publishing of photographs of drivers whose licenses have been revoked, and the reintroduction of coastal patrols, among several other initiatives. The Force has also introduced several new criteria for people applying for provisional driver’s licenses as well as the regular driver’s license. And in the wake of the campaign, many commuters were left stranded. Some were forced to pile into overloaded minibuses.“I de waiting fuh so long, so de fus bus wha come I went in. Don’t matter de bus was overload; I had to get to town,” explained one of the passengers. Some minibus operators took advantage of the lack of transportation the passengers faced and apparently blatantly overloaded their minibuses. Some passengers reported having to travel in minibuses where there were up to five passengers in a row. One minibus conductor highlighted that while carrying overload was wrong,Jerseys From China, there were so few minibuses on the road, and so many passengers who had no other way of travelling. And despite being asked to pay the new fares, the passengers did not seem to mind, as they had no other way of travelling.Nicholas Nnami, President of the Guyana Public Transportation Association (GPTA), said that while the GPTA was aware that there was a police campaign, the GPTA did not endorse overloading minibuses. Nnami explained that overloading a minibus was an offence, and, as such, operators found guilty of this would have to face the consequences.
