According to Armogan “we continue to see good performances from schools that continue to do well over the years and we don’t seem to be able to bring up the performances of some of these schools that continue to do badly”.Schools like Skeldon High, formerly known as the Skeldon Lutheran School, was a high performing institution along the Corentyne and today that school has dropped to the lowest level in performance in the region.The chairman reiterated that the regional administration will be working with these schools to bring them to parity. He disclosed that the region cannot be completely satisfied until over 80 – 90 % of the students in Region 6 can gain grades 1-3 in five subjects and over, inclusive of Mathematics and English.Armogan also revealed that there is a significant improvement in Mathematics for this year compared to last year and the previous years, pointing out that the region is above the national average in this regard.“The performance in English is over 50 % and the performance in Mathematics is almost 50 %. So I think we are doing better in these two core subjects that we have set ourselves to improve in the last two years.” Armogan did not fail to mention that the New Amsterdam Multilateral’s performance this year has dropped, highlighting that they once competed with the top schools in Guyana.Meanwhile according to the Regional Chairman, another thing that will be happening this year, is the introduction of some additional subjects in some of the pilot schools, some of the senior secondary schools in the region.“They are putting out a pilot programme with the inclusion of additional subjects outside of the academic curriculum, subjects such as Music and a push in the area of Physical Education,” Armogan said. He stressed that one concern encountered is land not being available to schools such as Line Path Secondary to facilitate students who may be writing Agriculture Science as a subject.
