It was just over a year that the threat of the new virus which was commonly referred to as the swine flu was discovered, injecting much fear and dire concern globally. At a press conference yesterday, Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy disclosed that there were several controversies that had surrounded the H1N1 pandemic. However, he is satisfied that the World Health Organisation (WHO) did the right thing in treating the health threat as a crisis situation.“It is better that we don’t have a crisis to deal with. I think the WHO for once adopted my principle which is to react as if you have a major problem on your hand. Overreact rather than wait and that’s what they did…and we don’t have a problem. I think that is good news for us.”Minister Ramsammy, however, asserted that although the WHO and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have indicated that the threat of the pandemic has passed,Jerseys Wholesale, it is still evident in some countries, including India and New Zealand.According to the Minister, reports suggest that the two countries are still reporting cases outside of the regular flu season.“We still have the flu seasons in countries to deal with, because when that time comes, you may still have H1N1 transmission. It doesn’t mean that no H1N1 is being transmitted now and it doesn’t mean no H1N1 will be transmitted in the future.”And should the virus return in a large way to many countries at the same time, it will find a population that is more resistant, cheap jerseys, as millions of people would have been vaccinated.Guyana, according to the Minister,NFL Jerseys China, had catered for 175,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine.Dr. Ramsammy recalled,Wholesale NHL Jerseys, though, that he was faced with the challenge of whether to utilise only the vaccines that were given as gifts from the WHO or also to buy additional doses. According to him, he was under pressure from many sources that were lobbying for a wider cross-section of the population to be vaccinated.“My challenge was whether we were going to get another $200M to procure more vaccines to add to the ones that we received as gifts.”After analysing the situation, the Health Ministry’s technical staff derived the solution that with good hygiene and with a sizeable section of the population being immunised, it was possible to prevent the virus from reaching crisis proportions. And since the crisis did not emerge quite as rapidly as anticipated in some regions, such as in the Caribbean, some countries, according to the Minister,Wholesale Authentic Jerseys, did not treat the threat as an urgent one.As a result there are countries that have since ended up with the vaccines they procured still in stock although they have expired. Some batches of the vaccines, the Minister explained, had short shelf lives.Guyana has been provided with two batches, one that will expire next month and another in October.“The last count that we did, we had exceeded 140,000 doses that we have already utilised around the country.A large number of Guyanese have been immunised and we expect that we are going to use all 175,000 doses before the expiration dates…So we don’t expect to have expired vaccines on our hand,” Dr. Ramsammy asserted.According to the Minister, both health workers and citizens have cooperated well with the ministry,China Jerseys NFL, a state of affairs which no doubt helped to avert a potential crisis.
