A new well, expected to end the water woes of the residents of Diamond, Grove and Kaneville on the East Bank of Demerara, will become operational in a matter of days, according to Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali.Currently, an estimated 8,000 persons are without water in these communities, which combined, is one of the country’s largest housing areas.Responding to questions on the water situation, Ali, in a recent interview with Kaieteur News, noted that the residents there have been suffering for a long time and the project has been a priority of the ministry.Currently, a well at Golden Grove which was drilled in 1970, that was supposed to cater for 15,000 residents, had been forced to supply the three new housing areas resulting in some areas being left without, because of negligible water pressure.“Residents had to fetch water from the existing well, an exercise which can take as much as one hour for a five (5) gallon pail of water, or purchase water, an expenditure they cannot afford,” the Minister revealed. The new well will not only have the capacity to serve the existing community, but will also have the capacity to cater for a 50% increase in households. The existing network is connected to adjacent systems and is in good shape and will not require upgrading. The new well is being installed at the cost of $56 million by Trinidadian-based contractor, Water and Oil Wells Services, and CEMCO,NFL Jerseys China, the consultants. The water well, located at Sixth Street, Diamond, will incorporate submersible pumps with electrical control panels and discharge pipe assembly and according to the minister, no maintenance will be needed for the first five (5) years. |
