Hururu residents who launched a protest in their Upper Berbice community have vowed to remain firm in their demand for RUSAL to reopen a blocked road which leads to millions of dollars worth of logging concessions owned by community members.Yesterday they said that will not be moved even as RUSAL has threatened to pack up and leave if the matter is not resolved by the weekend. “So what if they leave. We were surviving before they came and we will after they leave. We will not be bullied.”The residents are peeved over the Russian mining company denying loggers access to their forest products. They thus maintained the blockage of the disputed thoroughfare and maintained ropes across a section of the Berbice River, preventing RUSAL barges from traversing the waterway.Angry protestors charged that the demonstration will continue until RUSAL meets the demands of the community or come to some favourable resolution. The existing issue,Cheap Jerseys From China, demonstrators highlighted, is that RUSAL has set up a checkpoint, reportedly prohibiting loggers for three weeks now, from harvesting already-cut timber. Deputy Toshao for Hururu, Victor Walker, told Kaieteur News that the community has stood its ground with persons even staying overnight to man the blockage points. He said in the meantime, a meeting has been organized between the community and Council members in an attempt to outline the way forward. A letter would be sent to the administration of RUSAL to reiterate the community’s position, with the expectation of a reply in keeping with the urgency of the matter.Despite RUSAL reportedly proposing a secondary road to access the timber, residents are demanding the immediate reopening of the disputed road as fear over the products decay heightens.Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, cheap nfl jerseys outlet, told Kaieteur News yesterday that the situation occurring in the Hururu village is unfortunate. She said that an eye is being kept on the developments although her Ministry has no say in the matter since community business is essentially the responsibility of the village council.Walker had explained that the previous Hururu Council had signed agreements with RUSAL in which several acres of land at Kurubuka was leased for some $1.2M monthly. The contentious roadway, he said, was also leased to RUSAL for $1.1M monthly. Money from these agreements reportedly goes to the Amerindian Affairs Ministry, while $1M is returned to RUSAL for providing the community with electricity.Further agreements between RUSAL and the community included that logging in the area would cease as soon as the mining company began work. But Walker and other residents have argued that the agreement was bad since villagers depend on logging for their livelihood.Another resident said that the logging concessions are some distance away from RUSAL’s work area, and would therefore be away from the company’s mining space. The logging concessions,Wholesale Jerseys China, he however stated,Cheap NFL Jerseys China, has to be reached through the Hururu road and that is why access is needed. The Amerindian Affairs Minister confirmed these agreements but charged that the unrest in Hururu stems from a handful of loggers refusing to adhere to the previous arrangements entered into between the community and RUSAL.She explained that the loggers were supposed to stop logging when RUSAL started work but the company bent over backwards and allowed two extension periods for loggers to get their timber out of the back dam so that the roads could be accessed by RUSAL.It was however during that second extension period that loggers reneged on their agreement and proceeded to cut more timber which is now at the centre of the protest action since the logs have to go through the Hururu road.Villagers also protested that RUSAL was paying too little to take over their road and for the mining area. They argued that the company should pay some $12M monthly,Cheap NFL Jerseys, but Minister Sukai said protestors are opposing the realistic figure of $2.3M monthly (which is in keeping with market rate least land) offered by the Village Council.Sukai said that it was a few voices with a specific interest who are engaging in protest action. As such she said that her Ministry is merely guiding the Hururu Village Council on how it could take administrative control of the village.Region Ten Chairman Sharma Solomon said that he would be travelling to the village today to speak with villagers. He said that a meeting was held with Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Robert Persaud, wholesale nfl jerseys, who indicated another location for the mining company.Solomon however said that reports from his Councillors who visited Hururu showed that the community as a whole is dissatisfied with the previous agreements made on behalf of the village. Residents have alleged that the entire Village Council was not present when the previous agreement was made.Solomon said that he is however seeking to officially put forward a proposal that will entail mutual benefit where all parties shall attain from the resources. Solomon said he has continued to propose in every instance of such disputes that mutual benefits are the ultimate link for cohabitation. |
