By Leonard Gildarie Growing up, I have always heard about Guyana’s potential – of being the breadbasket of the Caribbean; ofLeonard Gildariebecoming a first world country; of Georgetown becoming a garden city again. Over those three decades or so that I had my senses, I always wondered. There were renewed hopes when I voted for the first time in 1992.I have learnt some brutal lessons in my life. One is that I should never hang my hat where my hand cannot reach.I am not a party animal or a big drinker. Rather, I am more of a family person. I like movies. So it is with interest that I have been following the country’s attempts to build its tourism product. I am convinced that our approach may be a little wrong, with all due respect to our new minister and the other industry experts.According to “guestimates”, we may have about 250,Cheap Nike Epic React Flyknit,000- 300,000 Guyanese living in the US and Canada. Some folks would tell you that we have more persons living out of Guyana than in. Neighbouring Suriname and Venezuela would account for about 70,000.I know for a fact that little St. Maarten,Cheap Hockey Jerseys 2019, a Dutch/French island near St. Kitts, in the Eastern Caribbean,Air Max 90 Essential White And Black, that is a mere 37 square miles, would boast about 5,000 Guyanese.Barbados,Womens Nike Air Max 270 Coral Stardust Shoes, Trinidad &Tobago and Antigua & Barbuda, also would have significant numbers. I even saw a news item last week in which two Guyanese have been accepted to the bar in Fiji.I was down in New York recently and heard Guyanese complaining collectively of one thing…the high fares to Guyana. I know for a fact that when Kaieteur News was reporting on Sonny Ramdeo and his forays into EZjet, a charter company that was aggressively pushing low fares, there was tremendous anger at the newspaper.Based on projections, Guyana can expect at least 180,000 persons visiting this year. The fares were low – just over US$400 for a round ticket. It was affordable. Nobody wanted anything to threaten that deal.Guyanese would know of times when Caribbean Airlines was the lone player and fares rose to over US$1,300. The charter companies that have come and gone are too many.We have Fly Jamaica and Dynamic Airways doing well, stabilizing the fares. However, many still find it too high.We are building a bigger airport with a longer runway, with the intentions to attract bigger planes and even make Guyana a South American hub. All well and good. That is long term.According to figures provided by the Guyana Tourism Authority,Adidas Nmd Shoes For Sale, between January and April 2015, some 66,495 visitors arrived in Guyana, using the Timehri and Ogle airports.Based on projections, Guyana can expect at least 180,000 persons visiting this year. But we can achieve so much more. The services sector is becoming increasingly critical to the economies of Caribbean states,Cheap Nike Free Run Shoes, according to the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association. For the layman, there are islands in the Caribbean whose economies literally depend on tourism. From car rentals to hotels, to restaurants to little trinkets, the industry is a huge one.Take Guyana, for example. Many families returning home would visit the creeks along the Linden/Soesdyke highway or visit the fishing wharves or Stabroek Market. They would take back suitcases filled with fish, shrimp and other cooked foods. We are a land known for our gold. We have quite a few restaurants and with the advent of the Giftland Mall, the entertainment aspect has been given a huge boost. Yet, there are many hotels with their rooms still empty. Many little resorts dot the rivers of Guyana. The potential is there. We cannot forget Kaieteur Falls or our proximity to Brazil and Suriname. The new Government would do well to listen to the calls of the folks from New York and work with operators to lower fares to Guyana. We have a consulate in New York and representatives in the other countries. All stops should be pulled out in wooing Guyanese to return home. They want to, once the price is right.Even the President should be involved. All around the Caribbean,Mens Nike Air Max 2018 Shoes, the invitations should be extended. The benefits will be significant for Guyana. It will help reduce our dependence on the traditional rice and sugar, and even gold.We should introduce attractive packages. A family paying a certain price should be able to fly to Kaieteur Falls or even Brazil. There are partnerships that can be forged.Let us think out of the box.I understand for our 50th Independence Anniversary next year, the plans are ambitious. Invitations are being extended for Guyanese to return in droves for the biggest party in the country. We were working on birding and eco-tourism. I think we can start simply. |
