Guyana has made significant progress in the fight against many infectious diseases,” she confidently asserted. In directing attention to Region Six, she emphasized that in that Region alone there has been 95 percent to 100 percent vaccination coverage. This accomplishment she described as commendable, as she urged the Regional Health Authority to continue to work assiduously to achieve 100 per cent coverage and seek to maintain this goal.According to Minister Cummings, based on information from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, there are five main reasons for placing emphasis on immunization. These she disclosed include the fact that “immunizations can save your child’s life; it is very safe and effective; Immunization protects others you care about; Immunizations can save your family time and money; and Immunization protects future generations.”She underscored too that “vaccines promote health and unlike many other public health interventions, vaccines can help healthy people remain healthy, and at the same time remove a major obstacle to human development. Vaccines also have an expansive reach: They protect individuals, communities,Wholesale Nike NFL Jerseys, and entire populations,” she added. This year, the World Health Organization and the global community are celebrating Vaccination Week from April 24–30, 2016, under the theme “Close the Immunization Gap: Immunization for all throughout life”. In the 1970s, the programme started to vaccinate against six diseases – measles, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, diphtheria and tuberculosis – but by the end of 2015, additional antigens against yellow fever,Wholesale Authentic Jerseys, Hepatitis B, mumps, heamophilus influenza, rubella,Cheap Basketball Jerseys For Sale, rotavirus and pneumococcal, meningococcal and human papilloma virus were included. But according to PAHO/WHO Representative, Dr. William Adu-Krow,Cheap Jerseys From China, the Government of Guyana, in collaboration with the PAHO/WHO, developed a plan for integrating Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) into the routine immunization schedule,Supply Authentic NFL Jerseys, nationwide.“The introduction of IPV was an important component of the strategic goals of disease eradication and routine immunisation strengthening that contribute to the efforts of Guyana’s Expanded Programme on Immunisation,” said Dr. Adu Krow. This comprehensive Polio Strategy, he disclosed, has led to the interruption of polio transmission in Guyana, contributing to the region becoming the first region in the world to be certified polio-free by the WHO.As such, he noted that sustaining gains on polio and other vaccine preventable diseases and building on this success through the introduction of new vaccines is a top priority for Guyana. To kick off its observance, the Region Six Health Services, along with MCH, held a walk on Monday to commemorate the launch of Vaccination Week 2016.This year, Vaccination Week is being held under the theme: “Going for Gold, Get Vaccinated.”After assembling along Main Street in Stanleytown, a contingent of about 300 persons consisting of nurses, and other regional health workers were led by the Regional Director of Health Services, Mr. Jevon Stevens and Minister Cummings.
