With a bandage to cover a wound to his throat, Sophia murder accused, Godfrey Stewart, 52, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchmin at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court,Cory Joseph Jersey, charged with the March 11 killing of his reputed wife, Jacqueline George.Looking older than his age, Stewart who was unrepresented by counsel was remanded to prison until May 14.He however indicated that his relatives are in the process of securing counsel to represent him.But judging from the utterances of his brother who brought a change of clothing for him, it seems that Stewart will have to paddle his own canoe.His brother was overheard describing him as a demon before leaving the court while the matter was still to be called up.Two of the victim’s daughters were also present in court and they continued to express their anger over the brutal murder of their mother.Stewart, a second time murder accused, is alleged to have slit George’s throat before setting her Sophia house on fire with the hope of concealing the crime.However a post mortem examination was able to unearth that George was murdered before the house was set on fire.Stewart went into hiding and emerged five days later with three stab wounds which he claimed were inflicted by George during a fight, shortly before she was killed.He spent almost two weeks recuperating in hospital but was charged immediately after his discharge.Stewart desperately tried to hide his face as he was being led from the courtroom. He also appeared disoriented.He hardly spared a look at his late reputed wife’s children who kept staring him in the face with contemptuous looks.The dead woman’s children indicated after the court hearing that they now feel a bit relieved now that Stewart has been charged.
