A Guyana Defence Force private was released on bail after he was slapped with several charges stemming from a confrontation with a police sergeant.The accused 19-year-old, Troy Glen, of 180 West Ruimveldt made his appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.It is alleged that on Wednesday July 16, at Vlissengen Road,Dale Hawerchuk Jersey, he used indecent language at Police Sergeant Keeron Anderson. It is also alleged that on the same day he resisted arrest.The army private was also charged with assaulting the police officer and with using a bicycle without due care and attention. To three of the charges Glen pleaded guilty; on the resisting arrest he pleaded not guilty.The court was told that on the day in question Glen was riding a bicycle south along Vlissengen Road and on his approach to Norton Street he failed to stop.Police Prosecutor, Denise Griffith, said that the accused then continued south and collided with the sergeant’s car which was proceeding west along the southern side of Norton Street.She added that the police sergeant then shouted at the accused asking him if he didn’t know he had to stop. She said that the accused responded with a vulgarity.Griffith further told the court that the sergeant then approached Glen to arrest him on all the charges which stemmed from that incident.However, Glen in his own defence told the court that he did stop at the intersection but the police officer was about to overtake another vehicle and ‘nearly hit him’. Glen said that is why he cursed the police.After listening to Glen’s explanation, the magistrate fined him a total of $35,000 for the three offences to which he pleaded guilty, and granted him self bail on the assault charge. He is expected to make his next court appearance on September 22.
