Buckets with filters will be distributed to the drought- affected communities in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) by the Civil Defence Commission (CDC).This intervention has been made possible through the United States Embassy’s Security Cooperation Office in collaboration with Waves 4 Water, a US based non-profit organisation. At a demonstration exercise on the use of the filters at the CDC on Tuesday, the agency’s Director General, Col. Retired Chabilall Ramsarup, explained,Argentina World Cup T-Shirts, “This will be distributed to the remote regions in Region Nine and hopefully by next Tuesday and Wednesday in Lethem, we will be able to teach the residents how to use it.”Additionally, he said, “Wherever there are problems with water, we would want to institute this.” Currently, there are discussions ongoing with the US Embassy to supply more filters. The CDC also made several other interventions to bring relief to the affected residents earlier in the year when the situation worsened due to El Nino weather conditions which resulted in the prolonged dry period.Thirty-five 450-gallon water tanks were sent to the sub districts of the region. “We have distributed 15 water pumps and these were two inch mechanical pumps, and what they do is put it onto a tractor and take it wherever there is water, and then pump the water into whatever containers they have.”The Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs continues to work with the CDC and other stakeholders to bring additional relief to the hinterland residents, as well as to those in other affected communities.
