The Alliance For Change (AFC) believes that the upcoming National and Regional Elections can be held by the 14th November, 2011, if GECOM allows no further delays. This was announced by executive member Dominic Gaskin. at the party’s weekly press conference at Fourth Street, Campbellville headquarters yesterday.Dominic GaskinGaskin said the AFC has also written to the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission regarding the issue.Noting that the party strongly advises that GECOM prepare for a mid-November elections date, so as to avoid December polls, Gaskin stated that if there is a December election this will impact negatively on the business and Christian communities.“This was one of the concerns raised by the AFC nearly one month ago in our initial response to the re-opening of the Claims and Objections exercise. Any further delay will make December the only option for Guyanese to have elections anytime in the near future.”Underscoring concerns about rumours that a small special-interest group is attempting to prevent the Guyanese public from exercising their constitutional right to vote for a government of their choice, Gaskin said it is rumoured that this group comprises persons who are poised to benefit politically and financially from a protracted extension of the status quo, which they expect will result from a failure to hold elections within the constitutionally prescribed period that ends on December 28, 2011.“Should this be allowed to occur it would reflect a complacency and dereliction of duty on the part of the opposition, the media, as well as civil society. In addition, it would represent a gross betrayal of all Guyanese citizens by GECOM,Air Force 270 Australia, including its Chairman and Commissioners.” |
