– MMU kicks into high gear MondayIn yet another move of preparation for the 2011 General Elections, the Media Monitoring Unit (MMU) of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has been resuscitated and is slated to resume operations on Monday.Dr. Steve Surujbally,China NFL Jerseys, Chairman of GECOM, yesterday presided over the re-launching of the MMU. He called the day a ‘red letter day’ as the unit is reinstated in the face of upcoming elections.Surujbally noted that the rebirth of the MMU is an important step towards ensuring that the 2011 elections will be conducted in an atmosphere of civility, decency,World Cup Jerseys 2018, respect and peace. He stated that the action is one that is made with support from many organizations across all spectrums – the Government, political parties, the media and a host of international organizations including the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Organization of American States and the Caribbean Association of Media Practitioners to name a few.The staff of the reinstated Media Monitoring UnitThe MMU was shut down in July of 2010 after the Government withdrew its support for the Unit and indicated same to the UNDP. Surujbally noted that early in 2011 there was a resurgence of “inciting articles and comments in the print and electronic media”. He went on to say that “there seemed to be a free-for-all, no-holds-barred journalistic modus operandi emerging. The MMU has during its existence, reined in the media’s propensity to relapse into crudeness, non-substantiation of supposed facts prior to publication and the promotion of sensationalism.”Surujbally shared the GECOM position that the success or failure of GECOM’s efforts are closely intertwined with the type of publicity given to pertinent issues. He said, “We in the Commission need your help and we in turn will support your task of probing, interrogating and exposing …” He went on to note however that the Commission had no room for the manufacture of untruths or any reporting activity that led to the creation of “damaging innuendo”.The Chairman pointed out the powers of the media, saying that we can “significantly influence the environment,Cheap Jerseys 2018, the atmosphere in which the campaigns for the upcoming Elections takes place.” He posited that one of the more important roles of the media in the upcoming elections is to “encourage participation in the democratic process” and to act as a source of voter education as well as a platform from which the political parties can share their manifestos – especially to first time voters.Surujbally reminded members of the media of their participation a little over a year previously in the drafting, ratification and implementation of a “non-legal,Cheap Jerseys From China, non-binding, self-regulatory Elections Code of Conduct” which will serve as the de facto guide for the reporting of Elections related issues during Elections’ periods. He noted that the media code of conduct has a bearing on three priority groups, owners of media houses and their editors, journalists and other media professionals, and the public on the receiving end.The value of compliance with the code of conduct for the owners of media houses and their editors is that it serves as a form of protection against criticism and legal action. The code provides a benchmark to which journalists can hold for the gathering and presentation of information. And for the public, the code of conduct provides a guarantee that the product of media reporting is a genuine reflection of the truth and is based on information that is fairly gathered and thoroughly checked.Surjbally went on to say that he was convinced that the MMU will be a major practicitioner in the peace of the upcoming elections. However, he also raised the point that the MMU should remain in place not just before, during and after elections,Wholesale Jerseys China, but also in the longer term,Wholesale Jerseys 2020, to continue its work of monitoring. He called on the media to ensure that they continue to report with balance, equity,Cheap Jerseys From China, fairness and accuracy. The Commissioner also addressed concerns over whether the MMU scope of monitoring would extend to mainstream internet media that are slowly beginning to make their mark on the news landscape. He said that he could not see why the MMU would not monitor the commentary on mainstream internet media in Guyana. The new unit will be housed atop the Church Street registration office and will be home to a staff of one manager, two supervisors and eight media monitors. The Unit will monitor the print and broadcast media on a daily basis for conformity to the principles enshrined in the 2010 Media Code of Conduct and international best practices in journalism. These findings will also be reported on at regular intervals by the Unit. |
