“It basically feels good that we are coming out on top once again,” said Queen’s College Senior Mistress, Candida Williams, as she commented on the outstanding performances exhibited by students of her school at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination this year.Williams is the Head of the Modern Language Department at the prestigious school which secured 14 spots among the best performing 27 candidates. Among them are Saieed Khalil,15 Ones and 1 two; Kelly Ann Persaud, 15 Ones; Candace Barnes, 14 Ones and 1 two; Lide Forde, 14 Ones, 1 two; Sophia King, 13 Ones; Shivanie Harry, 12 Ones, 2 twos; Navindra Akash Baldeo, 12 Ones, 1 two; Melissa Ram, 12 Ones, 2 twos; Sandesha Ramharak, 12 Ones, 1 two; Adunni Robinson, 12 Ones; Reshana Thomas, 12 Ones, 1 two; Mahendra Ramgobin, 11 Ones, 1 two; Mahendra Doraisami, 11 Ones, 1 two; Tishana Narine and 11 Ones, 2 twos. According to Williams, there have been several comments over the years as to how and why QC students are consistently successful. “Basically students are dedicated to their work. Teachers usually work hard and they go beyond the call of duty,” Williams confessed. She recalled occasions when she worked with top performing student Saieed Khalil during her free periods. “I would work with him and this was during his study break…These students that performed well are students who are basically determined to succeed. I am elated just like everyone else and we are hoping that in the future we can continue to upkeep the good name of the school.”According to Williams, the whole idea of supporting the continued success of students is not only hinged on “getting all grade ones” but the aim is also to prepare suitable persons with the relevant morals to enter the world of works.” With the performance already showcased, Williams is optimistic that a QC student will be dubbed the best in the Caribbean when the Caribbean Examination Council makes its final decision about the top CSEC performer.According to 17-year-old Navindra Baldeo, one of the top performing students, he was shocked and elated simultaneously when he first got the news that he had done well. “Mr Haridyal, head of the Science Department called me and gave me the news. I am just glad that all the hard work over the past five years has paid off.”The young man related how he took a lot of extra lessons and was well supported by his teachers and his mother, Bibi Baldeo, a single parent. “I ate and breathed CXC during that period…It was a lot of work that had to be covered.” It is Navindra’s belief that “determination and firm self confidence, backed with hard work” could lead any individual to ultimate success, regardless of their background or economic standing. The young man has his eyes set on venturing into the medical field, a move he intends to commence next month by enrolling for Biology programme at the University of Guyana. He has hopes of specialising in the field of paediatrics.According to the proud Bibi Baldeo, she couldn’t be more proud with her only child’s performance. She reminisced on the struggles she endured to ensure that her son did well, adding that she was forced to solely dedicate her time and energies towards her son after his father died three years ago. “He (Navindra) was playful at times. I had to quarrel a lot with him but he worked hard and did well in the end. I am very proud,” said an excited Bibi Baldeo.*************************Family donates basketball court, school supplies to Paradise Primary Members of the Haley family pose with students of the Paradise Primary School on the spanking new basketball court.A former student of the Paradise Primary School, Winston Haley and his siblings are determined to ensure that youths of their former alma mater are given every opportunity to realize their potential. To this end, Haley and his family have dug into their pockets in an effort to make the dream a reality with the donation of a quantity of school and sports supplies. In addition to the supplies the family had donated a complete basketball court equipped with adjustable nets in the compound of the East Coast Demerara school. And although school is still closed for the august holidays, already the youths from the village are making use of the facility.Speaking with this newspaper following the official handing over, Winston Haley, who resides in the United States of America said that the Paradise Primary School had moulded the formative years of himself and other siblings, providing them with excellent educational foundations which has paved the way for their personal and professional development. Our pleasant days at the Paradise Primary School have been forever etched in our memories. we along with our mother are here in Guyana on a family reunion which has offered an excellent opportunity to present our token of appreciation,Discount Air Max 90,” Haley said.he stated that in doping so it is the sincere hope of his family that that their “modest contribution” of the basketball court I particular would facilitate greater physical exercise by the students, thereby channeling their positive energies I positive directions which could lead to their all around development.“I’m living in America where basketball is almost their number one sport so I wanted to bring it to Guyana so that the young people could benefit here and not get themselves involved in ‘other things’,” he said.Haley was accompanied at the official handing over ceremony at the paradise primary school by his wife Gerryann Coy, and other siblings. This is the second time that the family has donated items to the school and according to Haley this will not be the last.
