It offers scope for people with disabilities to encourage, learn and interact among others.A “steering committee” manages the organization following an election held on May 26, 2011 at the Guyana Society for the Blind (GSB). Heading the steering committee is the President,Vince Dunn Jersey, Simone Poole.The Secretary is Joan Mapp; the Treasurer,Ryan Reaves Jersey, Winifred Toney; Assistant Secretary Compton Wilson; a Public Relations Officer and three committee members—Jeanette Jordan,Paul Stastny Jersey, Paul Cottam and Vibert Cooper.Ms. Kenzena Romao, a learning difficulties specialist within the organization, who is visually impaired, said that instead of one saying “blind”,Joakim Nordstrom Jersey, the individual could use “the person who is visually impaired”. She also shared other substitutes like instead of saying “dumb”, one can say “speech syndrome”; instead of “deaf”,Jack Johnson Jersey, “hear impaired” can be used.Supporting her comments were Paul Cottam and Compton Wilson. They spoke of disabled persons being talented but are not usually given the opportunity to express such. They also spoke of discrimination which often begins from within the home.The organization is on a six-month sensitization project to enlighten the public about a pledge that able persons should make towards the disabled.Yesterday three of the members visited the offices of Kaieteur News and presented a copy of the Persons with Disabilities Act 2010 which highlights the seven rights, to the management.The main aim of the project is to make the general public aware of the contents of the Disability Act. In so doing, the group has decided to target schools and churches as part of the first phase of the project.The members have also done radio and television programmes. The organization works in collaboration with the National Commission on Disability (NCD) and the V.S.O.They also wish to encourage persons with any form of disabilities to register and be a part of the growing team.
