As the dust settles on the recent unveiling of the 2009 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA), simple analysis of the results reveals that several of the country’s primary schools are improving their rate of performance.According to Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, the regional distribution of candidates saw a total of 119 being drawn from the District of Georgetown; 20 from Region Three; 15 from Region Six; 11 from Region Four; Nine from Region Two; Five from Region Five; four from Region Ten; and one each from Regions Nine and Seven. None of the top candidates were drawn from Regions One and Seven.Based on the list of the top one percent provided by the Education Ministry, there is evidence that some schools, particularly a few out-of-town, have done well.Among the lesser known out-of-town schools that placed in the top one percent, were Sparta Primary in Region Two, Ashmini Persaud with 559 marks and Shivnarine Sukhan with 539 marks; Edinburg Primary in Region Six, Raman Arjune with 559 marks; Aishalton Primary in Region Nine, Kyle Joseph with 557 marks; Augsburg Primary in Region Five, Aanisah Bacchus with 554 marks; Cumberland Primary in Region Six, Arifa Mohamed with 552 marks, Trevor Ramjohn with 551 marks, Jomesha Stewart with 546 marks, Minroy Punwa with 544 marks, Vanessa Sookmangal with 543 marks,Edgar Ie Jersey, and Natalia Rohoman with 542 marks; Regma Primary in Region 10, Oswald Haynes with 544 marks; Den Amstel Primary in Region Three, Towanna Fletcher with 544 marks.Also in Region Three the Wales Community High School was able to gain a place in the top one percent in the person of Dehesh Singh who received 543 marks.Among the other out-of-town schools were the Zeelugt and the Peter’s Hall Primary Schools which this newspaper was able to visit and talk with the top students last Friday.Zeelugt PrimaryRejan McKayDacia JohnFarahnaz Hosain, the lone top performer from the Zeelugt Primary School, on the West Coast of Demerara, was able to secure a place in the top one percent with her 556 marks. Along with five others, she ranks 20th among the top performers.The visibly elated Hosain said that she always worked hard so that she could be featured in the newspaper as an outstanding NGSA performer. She credits her success to her class teacher, Ms Anita Khan; her mother,Charles Aranguiz Jersey, Lisa Hosain, father Nazim Hosain and Deputy Headmaster of the school, Roopnarine Haripersaud.Haripersaud, during an interview with this newspaper said that Hosain’s performance will help to build the community’s respect for the school.He said that while Hosain has proven herself to be an outstanding student over the years, she has surpassed all expectations, thus highlighting that excellence can be drawn from rural communities.Class teacher Anita Khan said that she feels absolutely proud that Hosain was able to bring some recognition to the school.Peter’s Hall PrimarySituated on the East Bank of Demerara, Peter’s Hall Primary School was able to produce two top performers this year who are listed among the top one percent.Ranking at number 9 with four others,Blank Chile Jersey, 11-year-old David Ramroop, was able to secure a total of 559 marks.The out-spoken and devoted member of the Eccles Assembly of God Church, said that he prayed every night and studied alot.He said that he was however surprised when he first learnt of his success.The young Ramroop who lives with his grandmother,Jordi Alba Jersey, Pearly Sookhoo and Uncle Norman Sookhoo Junior at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, said that he was inspired to do well by his grandfather,Erick Pulgar Jersey, Norman Sookhoo Senior, who died two years ago.The lad, who is the son of Guyana Defence Force Accountant, Sharon Sookhoo, said that while he has not chosen a career, path he anticipates that he would venture into the Science or Mathematic streams.According to Head of the School, Grace Griffith, this is the first time that Peter’s Hall has been listed among the top 10 performers of the country.She also expressed immense satisfaction that with one mark less than Ramroop, 12-year-old Jenelle Geness from the school was listed among the top one percent performers. She has secured 14th place, a position she shares with two others. The aspiring Pilot said that she too received much assistance from her teachers,Dani Alves Jersey, her best friend Cassidy and mother Tresmorel Geness with whom she lives at Public Road Agricola, East Bank Demerara.Geness’ position is shared with 12-year-old Dacia John of the Skeldon Primary School in Region Six.According to Dacia John during a telephone interview as she prepared to board a flight to New York, she only learnt of her performance when she saw the newspaper yesterday morning.She credits her success to the assistance she received from her mother Indranie and father Arjune John as well as her lessons teacher,Marc-Andre Ter Stegen Barcelona Jersey, Sir Suban. The young lass said that she feels happy and proud that she performed well and is hoping to attend Queen’s College upon her return to Guyana.Rejan McKay of the New Guyana School who also shares the 14th position said that he is grateful to his teacher, Miss Shirley Greene,Miiko Albornoz Chile Jersey, his mother Janina Mohamed and grandmother Zahora Mohamed for helping him along.According to the proud 11-year-old he just wanted to do well. He said that he is satisfied with the fact that he has made his parents and grandmother proud.However,Sergio Busquets Barcelona Jersey, the aspiring doctor is yet to decide whether he will return to the New Guyana School or Queen’s College come September to complete his secondary education.For now, he is looking forward to his vacation in the United States where he is expected to travel to in another few days.
