One of the few times he visited her, Bobb-Carter recalled that “he took me to spend a weekend with his (new) family and kept me for a week instead. It was in fact her sister (her mother’s daughter) who located her on Facebook.What Bobb-Carter didn’t know is that her mother had migrated to the United States and had a daughter by the name of Helen Taylor.The profile name is in fact what caught the attention of Taylor, who started to send several messages her way. Bobb-Carter’s children also saw the messages and started to enquire.Several questions later, Taylor was able to confirm to Bobb-Carter that they were sisters and shared the same mother.In fact Bobb-Carter related that when her mother introduced herself for the first time as Carmen Bobb she was despondent. “I started thinking that this was the wrong person…my mother’s name was supposed to be Lorain.”But according to Bobb-Carter, it was her mother who revealed that her father deliberately didn’t give her caregivers her correct name. Bobb-Carter would only then learn that she was actually born Carol Bobb, but her father had given her name as Bernice and her mother’s name as Lorain.“I freeze when I realised that my mother was really alive and well and living in Georgia. Her estranged husband visited a few times, but would only tell her that their daughter was sent abroad to be with relatives.“He didn’t tell me that she was right here in Guyana the whole time…I was sad for many years but now I am very happy,” said a smiling Carmen Bobb, as she and her daughter shared a hug.And the plans to celebrate Mother’s Day today will be “big” according to Bobb-Carter. The two happily embraced each other and smiled unreservedly as they speculated that sharing the celebration this year will likely be the best they’ve ever had.
