Divisional Commander of the Police ‘A’ Division, George Vyphuis, was air-dashed to Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday for treatment following his collapse last week.Assistant Commissioner Vyphuis was admitted to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after falling ill during a senior management meeting at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.Initially, doctors carried out several tests to determine what his illness was but according to a source at the hospital, the diagnosis proved to be more serious than first believed. The source said that doctors had requested that further tests be carried out but this could not be done in Guyana.“His condition is stable but doctors thought it best to have him flown to Trinidad,Jerseys NFL China,” the source said.It is expected that Vyphuis will be off the job for an extended period and a replacement for his position will be announced soon.At present, Senior Superintendent Derrick Josiah is holding the fort as Commander but since the division is the main police division, the force might be inclined to appoint an Assistant Commissioner for the job until Vyphuis is back. This newspaper understands that the government has approved funding for the Commander’s medical expenses with a senior Office of the Presidential personally giving the approval. This has caused some amount of concern among other ranks of the force especially those who were injured in the line of duty and who were denied the required medical attention overseas. |
