However, it was explained that the contract is a fixed one, and that the companies are paid only for the works completed.The contract for this, one of the largest infrastructure initiatives in Guyana’s history, is about $3.204B,ED Belfour Jersey, with $2.395B disbursed thus far.It was noted that the relief channel has the capacity to withstand floods greater than that which occurred in 2005.Minister Ramsammy explained that the Canal,Jack Eichel Team North America Jersey, the most advanced part of the project, could be completed during the course of two weeks. It is dependent on the completion of the other major components.The excavation of the 10.3km long earthen channel was carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture. It is about 80 percent complete. He became angry, demanding to speak with a representative of Courtney Benn Contracting Services. But there was none. A displeased Ramsammy then ordered that Benn and his team meet with him subsequently.The visiting body was particularly impressed with the bridge sited on East Coast Public Road. Works are being carried out by DIPCON Engineering. Almost half of the work has been done. The process of building an incline road to the bridge is currently ongoing.Speaking with Kaieteur News, Joseph Harmon said that the current works are an indication that Guyana does not need the major input from foreign contractors and engineers. Locals are very capable, he added.“I am happy that work which we see here is done by Guyanese. It goes to show that we don’t need so much of the Chinese and other foreign contractors,” Harmon said.The construction of the Hope/Dochfour Northern Relief Channel was a venture undertaken by the former Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud,Pavol Demitra Jersey, who estimated an 18-month completion,Alex Pietrangelo Jersey, when construction commenced in February 2011. During late last year, 2012,Trevor Van Riemsdyk Jersey, Dr Ramsammy, who was then positioned as Agriculture Minister, announced an extended completion date- June 2013. This is now July, and the project is about a year behind the original completion date.While the Engineers are looking at an August 31 closing date, Dr. Ramsammy said that he is not very hopeful about that date, but he is certain about the Hope Canal becoming functional by the next rainy season (December-January).
