The Public Health Ministry is gearing toward reducing the rate of teenage pregnancy in 2016 through the execution of a teenage pregnancy strategy, Public Health Minister,Cheap Liverpool Shirts 18/19, George Norton, said yesterday.Norton stated that there is a strong connection between teenage pregnancy and maternal mortality. He noted that the majority of these pregnancies are unplanned and as such there is an insistent need to address the issue.The goal of the ministry was to improve the quality of life for adolescents through access to health services and information, he said.  The priority areas are sexual and reproductive health, school health, teenage pregnancy, nutrition and youth friendly health services, he added.For 2015, there were two cases of teenage maternal mortality—one being a 16 year-old girl. Norton said that the Ministry had conducted a multi-stakeholder meeting on the teenage pregnancy strategy. Standards were discussed for adolescent health care. The participants, he said, were tasked with identifying areas in which they will work on the implementation of the strategy.The Ministry has also held antenatal clinics for pregnant teenagers at several villages, including Agricola, Sophia, Grove, East La Penitence and Industry. As part of the programme, the teens are visited after they would have given birth in an effort to provide psychological support.According to Norton, intern University of Guyana Social work students assisted at Sophia and East La Penitence clinics. The ministry has also been collaborating with the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association to have satellite family planning clinics and SRH sensitization sessions.At present, Guyana has recorded 17 cases of maternal mortality for the year 2015, 11 of which occurred that the Georgetown Public Hospital. Last year, 18 cases of maternal deaths were recorded.The Pan American Health Organization stated that despite advances in the last 20 years, there has been too little progress in preventing adolescent pregnancies and maternal deaths, along with a little access to comprehensive sexual education and services for young people, especially in low-income countries.
