China National Technology Import and Export Corporation (CNTIC) will have to take responsibility for all losses and delays suffered at the Skeldon Sugar Factory, even as the test runs continue.Yesterday, President Bharrat Jagdeo made the comment during a meeting with members of the Guyana Sugar Corporation Board (GuySuCo) of Directors at State House. There seems to be growing dissatisfaction with the company’s performance as the President has indicated that he will only accept a functioning factory.During a press conference earlier this month, the Head of State said that he met with the Head of CNTIC during a visit to China.“He said that some of the problems are with the design and instructions from the people who are supervising…I made it clear to him that that is not our concern. He has a contract for a turnkey project and they should have indicated if there was a problem anywhere along the line.He said,Cheap Hockey Jerseys, nevertheless, that they are going to fix these and that they know what the problems are,” the President said during that press conference. According to the Head of State, he was assured that the problems will be fixed.Meanwhile, during a meeting yesterday, which was also attended by Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, the Head of State mandated the company’s directors to present to him a plan to deal with the specific challenges within the industry. The meeting focused on the decline of production over the years in the industry.Prior to the meeting yesterday, Minister Persaud had met with members of the board to discuss the way forward for the industry. Currently there is a production inquiry ongoing into the East Demerara sugar estates. That inquiry committee is headed by former Chairman of GuySuCo Board of Directors, Vic Oditt.Guyana’s Agriculture Minister had stated that it is time for ‘urgent action’ within the industry because of the decline of production. He said that while he is constantly being told that work is being conducted and corrective measures are being put in place at the East Demerara Estates, the production is still lacking. The inquiry committee will review and examine land preparation, sugar cane agronomy, use of field machines and equipment, cane transport, use of fertilizers and maintenance of field infrastructure.Over the years, GuySuCo has consistently reviewed its production targets, including this year’s, and among the many excuses proffered are far reaching strikes, weather, loss of opportunity as well as the consistent delay of the start and sustained operations of the Skeldon Factory. |
