…Gem Eytle is a ‘Special Person’“I grew up in the hat-and-glove era, where women were taught the intricacies of manners and deportment, and being a lady was more than just a word but a way of life.” By Crystal ConwayOur special person this week is a woman who despite her quiet, genteel nature has demonstrated the true meaning of courage, as well as an indomitable will. She is an individual who has risen above tragedy to not only build a comfortable life for herself and her family, but to also make life better for others. Mrs. Gem Eytle (and yes, she is a gem) who will celebrate her 80th birthday on Tuesday, is indeed a special person.Born on March 22, 1931, in Georgetown, Gem Morgan was one of six children to her parents; she had four sisters and one brother. She was raised in North Cummingsburg…New Market Street to be precise, where she still lives today, a mere one block from where she grew up.Her intial expression spoke volumes about her undoubted class.“I grew up in the hat-and-glove era, where women were taught the intricacies of manners and deportment, and being a lady was more than just a word but a way of life.”With such a background, she would later go on to use parts of her purposeful childhood to create one of our country’s now famous Easter traditions – the annual Hat Show and Tea Party which is held in the Promenade Gardens. Not one for just the external trappings of life, either, when Gem left school with her Cambridge Certificates as a young woman, she became a student at Ms. Rockliffe’s Commercial School – an institution which no longer exists. She had decided on a career in the secretarial field and pursued her training with diligence and hard work. She recalls that at Ms. Rockliffe’s, one was taught everything and not just tangible skills such as typing and shorthand, but office etiquette and general manners as they relate to the working environment.Today, she laments that these seem to have gone missing in the younger generation, pointing out that office decorum is sadly lacking,Kanken Bag Sale, along with other requisite skills such as proper diction and grammar. The ability to use a computer and the required programmes, she emphasises, is not the only skill necessary for success in a working environment. An Oxford Pocket Dictionary, Mrs. Eytle recalls, was one of the constants in her working bag. It was essential for one to have that little book; not makeup, not a brush or a comb, but a dictionary. It assisted you with the spelling and pronunciation as well as the correct usage of many a word, she noted. This was especially useful in the era of dictation and the typewriter, when backspace was correction fluid (highly frowned upon) and spell check was the nearest dictionary or thesaurus, and when one was required to either write in shorthand or take dictation using what was called a Dictaphone,Fjallraven Kanken Zaino Saldi, which was a recording device similar to the recorders of today, except that they were not digital, but used cassette tapes.Fresh out of school in 1949, Gem first joined the British Guiana Civil Service as a clerical assistant at the Poor Law Commissioner’s Office. Six months later,Hydro Flask Discount Australia, she was transferred to the Geological and Survey Department, and thereafter to the Supreme Court Registry, as a Secretary to the Chief Justice and the puisne judges. She recalls that in that position she often spent long hours working into the night, on the eve of some sentencing hearing or the other, since the judges usually did not come to their decisions until late in the evening. Her promising career took a challenging turn five years later, in 1954, when she was forced to resign from the job that she loved so much because of another love in her life. In the days before Independence, a married woman was not allowed to work in the public service and the young Gem had just gotten married to another public servant, Mr. Frederick ‘Freddie’ Eytle, with whom she would share almost 40 years of marriage before he passed away. She would later go on to have two children, Raymond and Kathryn, with her husband. Raymond Eytle is the Senior Assistant Registrar at the University of the West Indies campus in Mona, Jamaica where he is married to a Guyanese Veterinarian Sarah, with whom he has two children, Kaiel and Tamaisha. Mrs. Eytle’s daughter,Kanken Big Backpack Uk, Kathryn Eytle McLean stays near her mother,Cheap Nike Shoes From China, working closely with her on a day-to-day basis. Kathryn also married a Veterinarian, Dr. Nicholas McLean, and together they have one son, Kani. But back to 1954 – not one to stay down and out, the new Mrs. Eytle began to look for work in the private sector and found it at Francis De Caires & Co. However, to take advantage of the opening, she had to receive permission from her previous employers to begin working during her leave, cheap nfl jerseys sale, since upon resignation, she became entitled to six months’ vacation with pay after working in public service for four years. Permission was granted and with her can-do attitude that she had gained from her time at the Registry she soon became very successful at her new job.She started out at Francis De Caires & Co. as a clerical assistant and switchboard operator. In 1963, she was made Company Secretary and in 1976, appointed Managing Director. Today she sits as Chairman of the company now known as Frandec & Co.Her training and commitment to excellence in executing her tasks served her well in the world of work, where she has served as a business professional for the greater part of 62 years. She no longer keeps ‘eight to four’ working days since she is semi-retired, but after more than six decades of operating in that manner she finds the habit somewhat hard to break. As such, one can still find her at work for at least the first half of the day, staying as late as necessary behind her desk.Mrs. Eytle notes that despite the fact that she loves what she does and always has, she never allowed her work to interfere with her family time. Always involved in her children’s welfare, she took great care to be very active in their lives as they participated in a number of extra-curricular activities, all of which she made sure she was a part of.Today, however, she focuses a little more on her own well-being and spends her time cooking, sewing (for she can make her own clothing) and gardening, as well as her numerous works for charitable causes. Mrs. Eytle, like any good business person, knows the goods that she sells – which is most likely why her travel service is one of the most popular.A huge fan of travelling, Mrs. Eytle and her husband once completed a world tour. In fact, she was on a trip to Australia, on a cruise, when tragedy struck early this year. In the wee hours of January 10, the building which housed Frandec Travel Service, the oldest travel service in the country, went up in flames, taking along with it her offices filled with photographs, mementoes and documents spanning many years. Despite it all, she soldiered on with her trip and eventually made her way back home to survey the damage. She reflects that the fire left her in shock, and at times she still finds herself reaching for a document or file she needs when she is forcibly reminded that it is no longer there, and why it is gone. Her daughter, Kathryn, she pointed out, has been a great help to her through the entire tragedy, from the moment she informed her of the fire to the present.Of Kathryn, she says, “My daughter has made me very proud and stands ten feet tall in getting the business up and running.” The strength that Mrs Eytle possessed must surely have been passed on to her daughter for according to her, Kathryn had the business up and running, making reservations and booking tickets from her mother’s house within 12 hours of the fire. She went on to say, “She’s made me proud. She handled it like a maestro. I would not have been able to do what she did myself.”As she pointed out, “the time has come when I need my power nap.” However that still does not stop her from leading a full life, she goes walking three afternoons a week, on one afternoon she goes to see her shut-ins and Friday afternoons is her standing hairdressing appointment. On Sunday she spends time making cookies and other goodies for her grandson after church. She says that she also takes great care to keep in touch with all of her friends, through social networking applications on the PC, chat programmes and via telephone. As she puts it, she likes to “pay visits on the telephone.”Mrs. Eytle has not only led a full personal and professional life, but has applied herself with vigour to her charity and community works as well. She stands as a charter member of the Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown, a member of the Horticultural Society, treasurer of the Commonwealth Society of Guyana, Vice President of the Fire Insurance Association of Guyana and the list goes on.But of all her contributions, arguably one of the most delightful is that of the Easter Hat Show and Tea Party, behind which she has been a driving force for more than two decades.  For her stellar contribution to the Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown she received the coveted Margaret Golding award. After the Inner Wheel Club was chartered some 25 years ago, the ladies began looking for fundraising events. Having fond memories of similar events from her days as a teenager in the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), along with growing up in – as we mentioned earlier – the hat and glove era, Mrs Eytle began exploring the possibilities for reintroducing a hat show. She chose the Promenade Gardens because as a child she used to play in the lanes there, and during the Colonial days, the Militia band would play in the Gardens every Monday afternoon, and the ladies would come out dressed in their hats and gloves and walking dresses and stroll along on the arms of their escorts. So she sought to recreate some of that history. She recalls that she had some difficulty persuading the other ladies to hold the show at the Promenade Gardens due to the dilapidated state of the site, but she persevered and eventually prevailed.Part of the proceeds from the first two years of the show went towards the restoration of the Gardens and as time went by and the show gained a following,Stitched Basketball Jerseys NCAA, it has grown each year. At this point the show is considered an Easter tradition and the stage is graced by hats (and outfits) designed by professionals and amateurs alike. The show is a throwback to that time when a woman’s wardrobe was considered incomplete without a hat.Mrs Eytle fondly recalls those days when women wore hats to a number of functions and places such as weddings, church, garden parties and outdoor events as well as ceremonial functions. She says those days are long gone, and the hat-wearing tradition is carried on only by a few women who still remember the time. This year should all go well, Mrs Eytle promises that despite the loss of most of her records in the fire, the Hat Show and Garden Party will go on as planned. Set for April 30, we are sure that this special lady will grace the stage with her presence as she continues to set an example to Guyanese women. We also wish her well on her birthday.
