The first meeting of the General Council following the 21st Delegates’ Congress of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) was held yesterday at the Union’s Headquarters, Kingston, Georgetown.President of GAWU, Komal ChandThe Congress, it is recalled, confronted the decision of the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc (GuySuCo) to disapprove the paid release of union delegates to attend the Congress. Transportation was also denied to delegates from the sugar industry, the union said in a release.The meeting elected officials whom, among others, comprise the Central Executive Committee: the President, Komal Chand; Vice President, Harvey Tambron; General Secretary, Seepaul Narine and Assistant General Secretary, Aslim Singh.Other members of the Committee are: Mitchell Mc Bean from the Skeldon Estate; Michael Indardat, Albion Estate; Mohamed Ahamad, Rose Hall Estate; Jermaine Adams,Patriots Super Bowl 53 Jersey, BEV Processors Inc.; Bhikram Singh, Blairmont Estate; Adrian Singh, Blairmont Estate; Sookram Persaud, Enmore Estate; Gordan Thomas, Wales Estate; Francis Alabi, Rose Hall Estate; Janice Fowler, Uitvlugt Estate; Hernie Parks, Albion Estate; and Narda Mohamed from the GAWU Office.“The General Council also reflected on the 21st Congress. The meeting condemned the GuySuCo’s stance which it felt was aimed, seemingly, to undermine the Congress. The Union, nevertheless, was able to get full attendance to the Congress thus defeating GuySuCo’s ploy.” The release stated.The Union also stated that the current state of the sugar industry also attracted the General Council’s attention where members noted that, so far, GuySuCo is yet to address the Union’s wage/salary and fringe benefit claims for this year notwithstanding that all Government employees are to receive a pay rise from January 01, 2016.“They affirmed their commitment to defend militantly their rights and benefits. The meeting also extended its full and unstinted solidarity with the workers of Wales Estate. Members expressed the view that the Corporation’s plans for rice are unsuitable and strongly believed that the Estate could overcome its difficulties and challenges. Members also called on the Government and GuySuCo to rescind their nefarious decision noting the harsh repercussions that will follow should the closure decision be fully pursued.” The Union stated.
