By Michael JordanA constable shot a 22-year-old civilian dead on Monday during a drinking spree at the Orealla Police Station.The victim, identified as Trevor Wayne Jack of Orealla, Corentyne River, was shot in the left side chest with an FN rifle, and died shortly after.Reports indicate that the tragedy occurred when the police constable pointed the rifle at Jack while demonstrating how the weapon works. A report on the incident stated that there was no magazine on the rifle and that the rank was unaware that a round was in the breech.The constable, who is under close arrest,Babe Ruth Jersey, has also alleged that the weapon accidentally discharged when Jack grabbed the rifle and his right hand accidently touched the trigger.Reports indicate that the constable and victim had been drinking heavily before the tragedy.It is alleged that the constable, two female student nurses, aged 19 and 21, a male resident from Kitty, and Jack were consuming alcohol at a shop at around 19:30 hrs on Sunday.At around 22:45 hrs, they proceeded to Jack’s residence, where Jack collected a half bottle of vodka and a bottle containing a non-alcoholic beverage. The group then proceeded to Orealla Police Station’s kitchen, which is situated at the upper flat of a two-storey building. There, they continued drinking.It is alleged that at around 00:30 hrs on Monday, Jack asked the police constable if he had a firearm at the station, and the constable allegedly returned with an FN rifle which he had removed from the strong box room.“The constable then began to explain the parts of the weapon and demonstrate how it works, not knowing that a round was in breech,” the report said.At the time the constable was reportedly pointing the weapon at Jack, who was sitting on the floor about four feet away. “During the demonstration Const (name given) alleged that Jack held on to the muzzle of the weapon with his left hand and was pulling it towards his chest so he (the constable) held on to the butt and was pulling the weapon away from Jack when Jack’s right hand made contact with the trigger and the firearm discharged,” the report stated.“Jack was wounded to the left side chest and he died.”According to the report, the student nurses left the scene while the constable replaced the rifle in the strong box.It stated that burns were observed on one of the fingers of Jack’s left hand. Investigators swabbed the slain man’s left hand, and also swabbed both of the constable’s for traces of gunpowder. They also collected the clothing the rank was wearing when the shooting occurred and he was placed under close arrest.The firearm was examined and a 7.62 x 51 spent shell was extracted and kept as evidence.Jack’s body was taken to Skeldon Hospital mortuary. |
