As the assassination of Walter Rodney is memorialized thirty years later,Dennis Rasmussen Jersey, the Venezuelan Diplomatic corps and a number of Guyanese artists have launched an exhibition titled “Art in Resistance”.Launched last evening at the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation,Nick Foligno Jersey, the exhibition is said to be in “celebration of the life and work of Guyana’s illustrious son Dr. Walter Rodney and his contribution to the struggle for National Unity.”Present at the launching were a number of dignitaries including the Ambassador of the Venezuela to Guyana Dr. Dario Morandy as well as Prime Minister Samuel Hinds. There were also representatives of the local art scene in the person of Curator of the National Gallery,CM Punk Jersey, Elfreida Bissember,Valeri Nichushkin Jersey, as well as a number of local artists.The Ambassador in his address highlighted that around this time last year there was a similar exhibition which paid tribute to the Venezuelan revolutionary Simon Bolivar where the Guyanese artists were out in their numbers to support the exhibition by contributing artwork. Morandy said that the space was “not just a physical space; it is more than that. It is a place where our two countries can meet using art.” He went on to say that this was why this year “the space is dedicated to the memory of a great Guyanese Revolutionary – Dr. Walter Rodney.”The Prime Minister after viewing the exhibition said that although he felt it was a very strong occasion in the context of an art exhibition he felt that the Walter Rodney theme could have been much stronger.The exhibition was a collaborative effort between the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venzuela in Guyana,Craig Hartsburg Jersey, the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation (VICC) and the Guyana United Artists (GUA). In a press release from the GUA,Sergei Bobrovsky Jersey, it was highlighted that this collaborative partnership has been going strong for over 13 years. In that time there has been a series of exhibitions that focus on the “unifying features already present in our diverse historical patterns” in order to strengthen the relationship between Guyana and Venezuela.The GUA highlighted exhibitions that they have staged for South American Revolutionaries,Phillip Danault Jersey, Simon Bolivar and Ernesto “Che” Guevara.The exhibition which began last evening will come to a close on Saturday.
