The 18-year-old reckless, ruthless drunken driver who struck down five persons in three hit and run accidents on Wednesday June 11at Phillipi Farm,Rico Gathers Cowboys Jersey, Corentyne,Larry Allen Cowboys Jersey, Berbice, killing three in the process has been jailed for a total of 12 years. The man Nakash Persaud, 18, a market vendor of lot 121 No 51 Village Corentyne, was on 10 charges.Persaud appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s court where he was found guilty on three charges of causing death by dangerous driving.Around 18:30 hrs on June 11,Gale Sayers Bears Jersey, 2014, while driving a silver grey Spacio motor car, PPP 5842, he drove in a manner dangerous to the public killing Tabitha Latoya Bagot , 19,Jonathan Bullard Jersey, her sister Juanita Malikia Bagot, 16, and their three-year-old niece Shamaine Cort all of Philippi Farm, Corentyne.He was placed on $500,000 bail each on the three Causing Death by Dangerous Driving charges – a total of $1.5M. in addition to the $70,Michael Irvin Jersey,000 bail he was granted on two other charges.The girls had left to purchase phone cards to call their mother and were on their way back home,Gale Sayers Jersey, when the accident occurred a few yards away from their home.The other seven charges include three counts of failing to stop after an accident, three counts of failing to render assistance after an accident and one for driving under the influence of alcohol.On the day in question,William Perry Jersey, the drunken man was driving at a terrible rate of speed on the Corentyne when he first collided with Delroy Parks, 28, of Cromorty Village at Kilmornarck, Corentyne. He failed to stop and render assistance, but continued on his merry way hitting the two sisters and their niece at Philippi some miles away, killing them in the process. He again failed to stop but continued ruthlessly where he struck down Matthew Mc Bean,Mike Ditka Bears Jersey, 19,Tony Dorsett Cowboys Jersey, of No. 35 Village along the Public Road.After the accused was found guilty three weeks ago, his Lawyer, Chandra Sohan had asked for a probation report.During the report Persaud stated that he felt bad about the entire incident. He was not aware that he had struck down so many persons. His Lawyer Chandra Sohan had stated that his client had expressed remorse over the offence. He stated that his client had offered to pay $1.5M compensation each, but it was not accepted.Magistrate Singh before passing sentence took into consideration, that the accused had spent six months in jail before being granted bail and a further three weeks since he was found guilty.He then sentenced Persaud to four years in jail on each of the three charges- a total of 12 years. The sentences will run concurrently thus, Persaud will serve a maximum of four years.He will have to return to court on Monday to answer to the other three charges |
