… Canadian-based Guyanese donates books to UG LibraryA closed book is of no value. That was the sentiment expressed by Mr. Lal Balkaran on Friday last when he donated at least 40 books to the University of Guyana Library.Balkaran is an overseas-based Guyanese who migrated to Canada in his early years. The young man pursued studies in accountancy and internal auditing then went into practice. Over the years he eventually became recognized as an outstanding professional in his field.Over the years he himself has written at least six books on his home country and authored numerous articles on the land of his birth as well as works specific to his field.Dr. Marlene Cox,Jason Witten Cowboys Jersey, Dept VC of UG (left) and Mrs. Gloria Cummings,Jay Cutler Jersey, Dept Librarian (right) share a word with Mr. Balkaran over the donated books.He has a very close relationship not only with the academic communities in his field but with several Canadian publishers. Mr. Balkaran pointed out that he would constantly be sent books for review by professors and numerous other writers and is always asked to keep the copies. But he notes that after reading them they usually just pile up around his home.This is where his philosophy on books becomes important because the gentleman feels that if he will not be using the books then perhaps he should pass them on to others who may make better use of them and who better to do that than his fellow countrymen.This is not Mr. Balkaran’s first donation to the University either and it most certainly will not be his last. It is no secret that University level texts in any field are very expensive with even the most modestly priced ones starting at $10,Randy White Cowboys Jersey,000 and going up from there. Dr. Cox said that the University considers Mr. Balkaran a true friend of education and development and thanked him sincerely for his kind donation.Mr. Balkaran said that he feels that when people are gifted with knowledge they should work towards improvement for the whole of humanity.The books that were donated are not just about accounting or auditing either because Mr. Balkaran is a man of truly varied interests. He not only enjoys photo-journaling but he is also an avid philatelist.Among the varied books reflecting these interests there are also DVDs of photo documentaries of Guyana and one about Guyanese stamps from the very first stamp issued in the 1800s,Charles Tapper Cowboys Jersey, through the world’s rarest stamp which happens to be from British Guiana to the present day.Mr. Balkaran also makes sure that the society at large can make use of his books too; since he is a regular donor of volumes to the National Library.He noted that he was scheduled to make a similar donation to the National Library on Friday as well but this time on books about Astronomy,Kevin White Bears Jersey, Anthropology and several other specializations that are badly in need of updated works in the Library’s reference collection.
