There is no need for prophylaxis treatment in Guyana as it relates to the H1N1 virus, commonly called the Swine Flu. We may not be doing such a good job so we will have to try and reassure people and make them aware of all the facts about the virus. So we still have some more work to do.”According to Dr Persaud, efforts will have to be made to ensure that the public understand the symptoms of the virus and the importance of seeking medical attention should they have a flu, cold, or any respiratory ailment.He also reemphasised the need for simple hygienic behaviour, highlighting that actions such as repeated hand washing and covering of the mouth when coughing or sneezing can be very effective.These practices the CMO said can easily reduce the risk of the virus spreading.He said that the Ministry will not be letting up its efforts in anyway even as he pointed to the fact that the Ministry will continue to respond and sometimes even over respond to any health threat to the lives and wellbeing of the people of Guyana.“We know that this (swine flu) is all around us. If you look at the maps published Monday night by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) you will notice that Guyana has not identified any case but all of our neighbours have confirmed at least one case in their territories,” Dr Persaud divulged.“I don’t think that we are unique,Maliek Collins Jersey, special or lucky so I think it is only a matter of time that it reaches here, especially with the movement of people.”He noted that the efforts of the Ministry are geared towards preparedness. And according to Dr Persaud, the same services that are available at the public hospitals will also be available at the private entities in terms of testing.“If they do have a suspect and if cases are diagnosed or there is strong need for medication the Ministry will be willing to assist.”At the moment, the Ministry has a stock pile of TamiFlu that is available for anyone who may require treatment, Dr Persaud assured.
