– GRA, NIS have no record of company’s existence, Ministry of Labour mum Guyanese working for a Trinidadian company, ‘Water and Oil’, that is in Guyana drilling for water at Manchester Village,Orbelin Pineda Mexico Jersey, Corentyne,Cristopher Toselli Chile Jersey, Berbice  are up in arms over the treatment officials of the company are meting out to  them.In fact the company is deducting money for National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and other taxes, which the people say are not paid to the NIS and to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).Checks with the relevant agencies by affected workers show that there are no records of the company’s existence in Guyana. The workers feel that they are been robbed since monies deducted by the company for NIS and other taxes cannot be accounted for.Strange enough,Hugo Ayala Mexico Jersey, representatives of the two agencies have told affected workers that there is nothing they can do and that those affected should visit the media to let their stories be heard. One worker, Carlton Butcher, called ‘Rastaman’, a father of six of Alness Village,Custom Mexico Jersey, Corentyne, related a horror story.Carlton Butcher at the work siteHe stated that he has been working with the company since August 2010 when they started drilling for water.  He stated that officials of the company told them that they will be paid $5,000 a day for 12 hours work. Saturday would attract time and a half and Sundays and holidays, double pay. However nothing like that materialized. He said that they were then told that monies will be deducted from their salaries to pay their NIS and other Taxes. After a new manager came they were told that they will not be paid extra for Saturdays or Sundays. The employees stated that they are being paid by hand and received no pay slips. “We just sign in a book with no duplicate so we don’t even know if there are any records of any payment to anybody,Matias Fernandez Chile Jersey,” the workers said.Butcher,Eugenio Mena Chile Jersey, a former GuySuCo employee,Hirving Lozano Mexico Jersey, said that after a while he decided to make checks with the NIS to see if any monies were being remitted in their names. To their dismay, they were told that NIS doesn’t have any record of any company by the name of ‘Water and Oil’ operating in Guyana and that no money has been remitted in their names for anything.Butcher stated that he then made a visit to the GRA where he was told the same thing. He then collected a form from the GRA, filled it up and took it to his boss to complete and sign. But the man,Edinson Cavani Uruguay Jersey, who is being assisted by four other Trinidadians, refused to acknowledge the document.A representative of the NIS Port Mourant Office subsequently visited the work site and had a discussion with the managers, but nothing came out of that visit. Visits were also made to the Ministry of Labour, but the officers there seem reluctant to assist. They were always promised that someone will visit. But nothing materialized. A Miss Marioye Rowana who is an Occupational Safety and Health Officer attached to the office gave them a contact card,Marcelo Diaz Chile Jersey, but that was all they heard from the Ministry of Labour, they said.Butcher was singled out as a trouble maker and was told that he was not required to work anymore.  He is owed salary since May 26 and his former employers are refusing to pay him, he said.Butcher stated that he told the managers that he will take up his cause is search for justice but he and other disgruntled workers were told to go to ‘whoever you all want’ and wherever they want.Butcher stated that he has been making relentless checks with the relevant agencies to get his money and justice but to no avail. He was constantly told by these law enforcement agencies that he should contact the media to air his story. The man said that he is frustrated and is seeking help for himself and other workers who are afraid to come forward because of threat of victimization or loosing their jobs.A number of workers have been injured on the job and have received no compensation. The company has been drilling for water at the location since last year. This is the third attempt to find water at the location. Some questions the workers and other Guyanese are asking are: How a foreign Company can be allowed to work in Guyana with out the relevant documents? How can a company pay workers with out a pay slip? How can a foreign company be allowed to rob Guyanese workers by deducting monies for NIS and taxes and do not remit same to the relevant agencies? How can the said relevant agencies when alerted of the situation state that they cannot do anything about the situation? These same enforcement agencies are carrying Guyanese to court for meager offence, but seem hopeless to harness  a foreign company that is running loose, people say.
