Alliance For Change (AFC) co-leader and Attorney at law Khemraj Ramjattan has provided Amnesty International with details about the torture that was meted out by police ranks to a 14-year-old boy.Ramjattan,Teuvo Teravainen Jersey, who is representing the injured teen,Colton Parayko Jersey, told Kaieteur News that he provided Amnesty International with the information yesterday after an official contacted him requesting details about the case.“They indicated that they would lobby for charges to be leveled against the policemen who carried out the torture and they will direct their attention to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Attorney General’s Chambers.”But Ramjattan said that he wanted more to be done by human rights organisations.“I want a condemnation to be issued and also a lobby by international organisations in view of the other (incidents) of torture I mentioned to them.“Our police force must undergo a proper commission of inquiry…we want an investigation that can examine why this systematic torture occurs. A lot of people have complained of inhumane and degrading treatment. Suspects of serious allegations have repeatedly complained of torture.“It’s tarnishing the name of the police force. It would do the police force good to regain its credibility if it undergoes this investigation and members of the police force deserve this investigation.”Ramjattan has said that he would like to see civilian oversight of the Guyana Police Force. He expressed the view that not instituting charges against rogue policemen is an incentive for those ranks to continue to brutalise suspects. The minor was placed in lockups meant to house adult inmates. He was then beaten and his genitals set alight by police ranks at the Leonora Police Station.Police officials had kept the whereabouts of the injured lad concealed from his parents. He was only released and given medical treatment after the Kaieteur News carried a graphic photograph of the teen’s injuries along with a story of the barbaric treatment he endured at the hands of the rouge policemen. The teen was detained last week Tuesday in connection with the murder of former Deputy Region Three Chairman Ramnauth Bisram,Erik Gustafsson Jersey, who was stabbed to death in his Canal Number Two,Brandon Saad Team North America Jersey, West Bank Demerara home. |
