The recent Linden Town Week celebrations will forever remain etched in the memories of lots of children in the mining town, and their parents too. These children (and their parents) were taken back in time to the days when trains, tram or gang cars, and bauxite cars and locomotives were an integral part of this community. They were taken back in time by actually riding one of these appurtenances- the gang car, or breakfast scooter, as it was popularly known in those days. The latter name was applied because the scooters transported workers’ lunches from Mackenzie to the various mining sites such as Arrowcane, Montgomery and Dorabecee.Jones is keen to have this locomotive up and runningWorkers designated to the railroad tracks,Cheap Soccer Jerseys China, were also transported back and forth, on the little ‘trains,’ to identify and correct any problems on the tracks. It was the consensus,Soccer Jerseys China, by both Lindeners and visitors to the community, that the initiative to ‘resurrect’ the scooters was most laudable, as they were just lying dormant at the railroad yard and slowly ‘disintegrating.’In that state the scooters were very much at risk of being sold off as scrap metal. That would have been a real shame,Cheap Soccer Jerseys Wholesale, according to one resident, who opined that such paraphernalia from the old days of bauxite mining should be properly preserved and added to the current list of artifacts at the Linden museum. It was even suggested that the museum and the Linmine Secretariat should seriously consider collaborating and developing another museum site; possibly right at the old railroad yard, which has the capacity to accommodate and showcase some of these large artifacts. However, the children who were taken on the ride were not interested in all that- they just wanted to experience the thrill of the tracks. This was a welcome diversion for the excited children (and their parents) who both squealed in delight as the scooter glided along the tracks which were especially installed at the old Mackenzie band stand area, for the 40th anniversary of the town.Linmine Security guard, Thomas Pearson, gets a feel of the refurbished scooter, which has the capacity to carry six persons. For many persons who previously complained about the Linden Town Week not accommodating family-oriented activities,Soccer Jerseys From China, the scooter was a great initiative. And even others who were not afforded the excitement of the train ride,Cheap Soccer Jerseys, unanimously reiterated that it was a fabulous idea indeed. But what many of them did not know was that the reemergence of the scooter was only made possible through the hard work, dedication, sweat and toil of three men, Paul Jones, Steve Pearson and Colin Gravesande.Jones, a welder/fabricator of international repute,Cheap Soccer Jerseys Authentic, was quite candid in his comments about the scooter,“This is history being recreated right here— this will give young people in Linden and even further afield the opportunity to experience what used to be in the old days, when the ‘wheels’ of production in Linden, literally turned on the railway tracks. Those were the days when bauxite workers and their families, depended almost entirely on the railway for commuting purposes, within the town. But back to the scooter which consisted of two carriages and a ‘locomotive’ (engine) these novelty ‘cabs’, which are painted bright red, look like something out of Disneyland.According to Jones, he was approached by Chief Executive Officer of Linmine, Horace James, to refurbish the scooters, and have them up and running for Linden’s 40th anniversary.Loving a challenge, Jones quickly acquiesced. It took more than eight months to get the scooters rolling again. However, Jones was not alone in this endeavour as he was ably assisted by Pearson and Gravesande. He dealt with the outer components of the scooters, while Pearson worked on the engine. After countless laborious hours, the engine finally sputtered to life. The men’s hard work had paid off. The scooters were once again ready for the railway tracks. The men were ecstatic, and the children could hardly wait to experience the thrill of the railway. However, while the rehabilitation of the scooters is a big thing for Lindeners, for Paul Jones it is a small achievement in his repertoire of achievements, but one which nonetheless fills him with pride, as it afforded him the opportunity of bringing joy to the little ones.Jones is already considering the possibility of refurbishing another reject from the Linden railroad yard— the lone Pullman train. He exclaimed excitedly, “I can bring this thing back, even if I have to build it from scratch, and we have enough tracks for it to run on- we even have two locomotives, and at least one of them is still working.“All that we need is some financial support from both the government and corporate entities.”We talk about developing tourism in Region Ten, this is an ideal way to do it.“eople would just love to come ride the trains here in Linden. And at the same time we would be preserving our history!”Jones said that it would be a real shame if one of the last relics of the Pullman train era, is allowed to simply disintegrate. And judging from the passion this young man has for his job, refurbishing or rebuilding the old Pullman train would be child’s play; and something that can certainly become a reality for Linden town Week 2011, with the necessary support. For according to Jones, who has worked on such big projects as the Demerara Harbour Bridge, he can get that thing up and running before “you can blink an eye,” and I believe this man, who proudly declares that with his welding torch and the requisite metal, he can create anything. In other words, he can literally create magic with metal. Such talent in our midst is most welcome, as we all need a little magic in our lives, especially the children. (Enid Joaquin) |
