Hughes reminded of the party’s seven parliamentary seats, three of which were held by women.The politician emphasized that the structure of her party has always allowed women to participate, whether it is at a parliamentary level or even in an in-house meeting.However,Johnny Herrera Chile Jersey, if it is elected, Hughes said that there are some specific things that an APNU-AFC government would be happy to do for women living in Guyana.The AFC executive member not only expressed concern about the number of women who fall prey to domestic violence in Guyana, but also said that the opposition is concerned about the number of women the country loses in maternal deaths. Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon had disclosed that there were 18 recorded maternal deaths for 2014, ten of which were at the Georgetown Public Hospital alone.The APNU-AFC plan will look at those areas,Miguel Layun Mexico Jersey, Hughes said,  and stressed that, once elected, the party will implement a programme which comes with a special view in mind for women. Hughes said that its wide-ranging plan also takes into account the need for proper shelter arrangements for “battered women” or those who may feel trapped in a situation that has all the characteristics of domestic violence.“We are talking about a comprehensive plan where we are providing accommodation for a family and a woman who is facing severe domestic abuse. Quite often, a woman does not want to walk away from that relationship because she knows she can’t walk with her four children and doesn’t have any money because she has been a homemaker for so long and so she deals with it and endures it.“So we are talking about a programme that provides accommodation for her and her children and she wouldn’t have to worry about how they will go to school or where she will get money from,” Hughes explained.The politician explained that the programme will ensure that such women and their children can stay up to six months in the facility and there, she will be cared for by councillors and given assistance by individuals who will take account of her skills and help her find a job.Hughes said that the programme will also take into consideration initiatives that will improve the lives of female police officers. She explained that the political opposition wants to equip those police officers with certain skills so that they too can be integrated into a plan that will see them serving a role as it relates to dealing with the plight of women in the communities they serve.The opposition member said too that after reading certain stories in the print media, especially those relating to women who lost their lives, it is evident that the entities that are supposed to be providing support to the respective families are not doing their jobs sufficiently in those situations. An APNU-AFC government,Efrain Velarde Mexico Jersey, the politician said,Pa Konate Sweden Jersey, is hoping to address this.Further,Blank Sweden Soccer Jersey, the AFC member said that she has asked the opposition’s economic advisors for help in relation to another matter that seeks to develop programmes or incentives for companies so as to encourage them to have daycare facilities at their offices.“The reality is that women are not able to be involved and employed at some of the companies they would like to be at because at lunch time, they have to leave to pick up their children or leave at 3:00 pm to make sure that they can look after children and we have an innovative programme to assist in that regard,” Hughes articulated.She said, too, that the opposition is also looking at increasing the salaries of teachers and nurses as she strongly believes that more needs to be done for Guyanese women.“They are the ones who take their pittance each month and they manage it as best as they can. They will make sure there is money for electricity bill, food is on the table and in the lunch kits, so I am really excited that the women in the AFC and those of the APNU will do better for Guyana’s women.”AFC Leader, Khemraj Ramjattan in support of his colleague’s position said that while there has been a lot of talk that the new alliance only seems concerned with the distribution of “power posts”, Hughes’ statements tell the truth about what the APNU-AFC arrangement is interested in,Arturo Vidal Chile Jersey, and that is, “having a better Guyana”.Ramjattan said that for one to make all those things Hughes spoke about along with other programmatic policies possible, they will inevitably have to be part of the government, hence discussions were held about their Cabinet arrangements.
