…more showers, wet Mash expectedHeavy rains drenched the country over the last 48 hours, leaving several communities under water and authorities hinting that the Mashramani celebrations tomorrow will be a wet one.Yesterday, reports from across the country indicated that communities like Black Bush Polder, Region Six; and Kwakwani and Coomacka, in Region  Ten were among the hardest hit.At least one water conservancy in Essequibo is said to have overtopped because of excess waters.Residents of several communities claimed that they lost poultry and sustained millions of dollars in water damage to homes.Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Bourda.Montrose, East Coast Demerara.There were several reports of vehicles mistakenly driving off the roads into ditches.The rains yesterday, because of their intensity, were said to be among the worst since the 2005 floods.Several streets in the city were under water as rains which started Saturday developed into a steady downpour early yesterday morning.Government said that it dispatched a “Ministerial” team along with engineers of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) to assess the situation. President Bharrat Jagdeo also inspected several affected areas of the city and coastlands.There were several unconfirmed claims of some kokers, especially at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara being left unattended, compounding an already bad situation.Expect MoreWarning residents of especially low-lying areas to be vigilant, the Ministry of Agriculture said that rains are part of the La Nina phenomenon which is expected to persist until next month.The Ministry’s Hyrdometeorological Service said that at least 5.8 inches of rains fell at Land of Canaan within 24 hours, the highest in the country being recorded by stations.“The second highest amount of rainfall over the same period was 127.1 mm (5.0 inches) which occurred at St Cuthbert’s Mission, Region Four.  St. Cuthbert’s Mission recorded 274.1 (10.8 inches) of rainfall in 48 hours.”Radar data indicated that the East Demerara Water Conservancy and the Boeraserie Conservancy both had in excess of four inches of rainfall within a 24-hour period.In Region Two,Tom Brady Patriots Jersey, the Supenaam Forestry measured five inches of rain while Leguan, De Kinderen Back, and Boerasirie were not far behind, passing the four-inch mark.It was the same thing for recordings taken on the East Demerara areas and in West Berbice. In Region Six, the rainfall was less but still a formidable 3.96 inches.Wet MashToday, the rains are expected to continue, similar to conditions being experienced yesterday, the Ministry said.According to the Ministry, showers can be expected mostly along the coast tomorrow.“The La Nina phenomenon still persists and is expected to do so until the end of the first quarter of 2011. Therefore, the rainfall quantities experienced may occur from time to time as La Nina continues to influence our weather pattern.”South Ruimveldt.Already, NDIA has intensified deploying “a significant number of personnel and equipment being deployed to vulnerable areas to implement necessary interventions”, the Ministry said.In Region Two, as a result of heavy rainfall, water levels were high in residential and farming areas. Areas affected include, Lima, Anna Regina, Henrietta, Richmond, Bush Lot, Reliance, Better Success, Westbury, Affiance,LeGarrette Blount Patriots Jersey, Columbia, Queenstown, Zorg, Johanna Cecelia and Supenaam.Water accumulated in the Golden Fleece and Iteribisi conservancies and as a result there was overtopping of the Golden Fleece conservancy.“An excavator has already been deployed to assist in rectifying this situation. Empoldering and heightening of dams at Pomeroon are currently being undertaken while relief outlets at Unu Creek, Iteribisi, Capoey and Riverstown areas have been opened. Water is being released at Iteribisi and Riverstown areas. The high waters are receding.”In Region Three, water levels were high in Canal No. 2 Polder, Pouderoyen and Patentia.“Other areas affected include Sans Souci,Merril Hoge Steelers Jersey, Wakenaam, Waterloo, Dorn Haag, Leguan,Deion Jones Falcons Jersey, Western Hogg Island, low areas of Windsor Forest, Bell West, Oku Canal No.1.“At present, the NDIA’s pontoon and excavator are dredging the Windsor Castle outfall channel.”NDIA excavators were also working at Canals Polder, Windsor Castle and Parika back.“In addition, the NDIA has completed the rehabilitation of the Stanleytown pump bypass channel and has re-deployed a mobile pump from Leguan to Blankenburg.“Monthly maintenance cleaning of both Canal polders main drains are in progress. The NDIA is also deploying pumping equipment to supplement drainage at the Patentia sluice.”In Region Four, high waters are reported in all areas of the region. Areas affected include the low areas of Unity, Vryheid’s Lust, sections of Lusignan, Montrose, Annandale, Bee Hive,Rod Woodson Steelers Jersey, Craig, Friendship, Diamond, Providence, Peter’s Hall. High water levels in canals in Montrose and Cane Grove were reported.The doors at Greenfield were open after the NDIA’s dredging equipment cleared the Greenfield outfall channel. One of the doors at Hope was also opened providing additional relief for residents in the area.Drainage pumps are operable at Hope, Melanie Damishana and Victoria. Excavation of the Triumph pump basin has been completed along with the excavation of the Annandale bypass and installation of tube. Tractor pumps will be installed at Craig, Friendship and Herstelling, East Bank Demerara while the NDIA completed repairs to the Mosquito Hall sluice winch. Excavation works are currently ongoing at Alliance Road,Austin Hooper Falcons Jersey, Timehri.A mandir in Better Hope,Brian Poole Falcons Jersey, East Coast Demerara.In Region Five, there was accumulation of water at Blairmont and Ithaca with an increase in water level in the upper reaches of the Mahaica, Mahaicony and Abary Creeks. Heightening of embankments at Mahaicony was being undertaken yesterday, the Ministry said.In Region Six, areas affected include No.19, Sheet Anchor with minor accumulation in Johanna and Mibicuri housing areas.Region 10 floodingIn Region Ten, rainfall was reported in Kwakwani with accumulation of water at Coomacka mines. There were reports of high waters in areas of Kara Kara Creek.In Georgetown, there was flooding in some low areas of South Georgetown, Bel Air and sections of Queenstown. There were also high waters in the low sections of Sophia and sections of Newtown and Kitty.“The City’s Engineer Department has reported that all pumps are operable. The Mayor and City Council has responsibility for drainage of the city.”In GuySuCo cultivation areas, there were reports of accumulation of water in some low fields in LBI and Enmore estates. In addition, there were reports of high water at Montrose and Good Hope.  Two drainage pumps at Good Hope would have been placed to service last night.Yesterday, the NDIA urged “all Regional Democratic Councils, Neighbourhood Democratic Councils and residents to be vigilant in the timely operation of all sluices and pumping stations and ensure waterways are cleaned and free of garbage.”Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud, who is currently attending a meeting in Kenya, has been updated on the situation and the Ministry’s response to deal with current heavy rainfall.The Ministry of Health also issued a number of flood safety tips which included staying out of the waters and taking precautions from mosquitoes.Prime Minister, Sam Hinds, in a statement, said that in excess of eight inches fell within 72 hours in the city and outlying areas.“His Excellency, the President, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Kellawan Lall,Heath Miller Steelers Jersey, and Transport and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn,Hines Ward Steelers Jersey, are out assessing the situation.Our drainage system is functioning and 24 hours surveillance is being conducted to ensure maximum drainage.”The PM disclosed that citizens unable to occupy their homes can contact the Civil Defence Commission on telephone numbers  226 -8815, 226-1114, 226- 1117.
