…as Union honours standouts“Teachers are the foundation on which a good education system is built and a good education system is the foundation on which any nation is built,” this was the simple message conveyed by President David Granger when he delivered remarks at the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU)’s Awards ceremony on Tuesday evening to honour outstanding teachers of 2015.President David Granger (sixth from left, front row) in the company of the awardees. The event, which was held at the Georgetown Club, was held under the theme ‘Empowering Teachers, Building Sustainable Societies.’President Granger was invited as the guest speaker, and during his address to the gathering of mainly educators, made it clear that teachers are the most important elements in a country’s education system. He emphasised that teachers are the foundation of the education system because of the critical role they play and the heavy responsibilities they bear.“Teachers are responsible for the transmission of knowledge, the transmission of values, the transmission of attitudes. Teachers support the maintenance and the safeguarding of the reputation of schools and of the standards of society. Teachers are key to ensuring that there is a sound learning environment in our country,” the President asserted. He moreover stressed that the school system will collapse without teachers, and by extension, the country too. It was at this very juncture that the Head of State observed that the education system is currently in crisis.“We know that the performance of our students, at both local and regional examinations, suggest that we need to do better; we need to look more closely at what is taking place in our schools…”“Too many of our children have been dropping out; have been failing,” said President Granger as he disclosed that more than half of the children who wrote English A and Mathematics at the 2015 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination failed to obtain Grade One to Three passes. He noted too that the performance of students in Chemistry, Physics and Human and Social Biology this year was described, even by the Ministry of Education,Kemba Walker College Jersey, as unsatisfactory. The President made mention also that the performance of the top one percent at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) served to obscure the truth about the overall performance of pupils.“Below the tip of that iceberg there is a huge body of children who failed,Bill Walton College Jersey,” said President Granger as he added “tonight, tomorrow, next week,Robert Woods College Jersey, next month,Ryan Arcidiacono Villanova Jersey, next year, you’re faced with this challenge of making Guyanese citizens of an educated nation.”Also speaking at the forum was Technical Advisor to the Minister of Education, Vincent Alexander. In supporting the President’s remarks, he noted that education is arguably the most important sector in the country. “Without education and without the developers of our manpower, notwithstanding all of the resources we may have,Cheap NFL Jerseys, all of the policies that we may have, we will not be able to achieve our objectives.”He moreover commended the teachers for their contributions throughout the years, adding, “We have to work together to improve conditions.”In the quest to improve the sector, Alexander said that the Ministry joins the Union as partners, and not as adversaries, in giving recognition to the nation’s teachers.“Our education system is one that requires tremendous work if we are to achieve what we want the nation to achieve,” said Alexander, as he thanked the older teachers honoured and urged that the younger teachers walk in their footsteps.GTU President Mark Lyte, speaking directly to the awardees, also commended them for their years of hard work and sacrifice. Those selected for awards, he noted, were chosen from among their respective branches and were experiencing something that many teachers only dream of.“In some countries this recognition comes with some pretty nice perks; not so tonight, but by way of award we want to recognise your contribution to education in Guyana and your contribution to the work of the Guyana Teachers’ Union,Ronnie Lott College Jersey,” Lyte said.He explained that the teachers recognised for the awards, were selected because they went above and beyond the regular duties of a teacher to make an impact in their school environment. A teacher of the year, he added, should inspire all students to learn.“Teachers who aspire for this award do not stick to the textbook or the traditional methods of teaching,Josh Rosen UCLA Jersey, they find creative ways to make materials accessible to their students and (they) stay up to date with best practices to help enhance instruction,” Lyte added. The event was chaired by GTU General Secretary, Coretta McDonald, who committed to the President that teachers will work to help improve the profession. She, at the time, also made an appeal for more support to be afforded teachers. |
