September is designated Education Month and as usual, a plethora of activities has been streamlined Region-wide to commemorate the month.Primary among the activities are two innovate campaigns – “Give a Book” and “Drop Everything and Read” – which the Ministry is calling on all Guyanese to actively embrace as the celebration takes its course. The move, according to the Education Ministry, is intended to emphasise the importance of reading.And already some of the persons supporting the Ministry are President Donald Ramotar, Leader of the Opposition, David Granger; AFC Leader, Khemraj Ramjattan, representatives of the religious community, top performing students and even national cricketer, Ramnaresh Sarwan.And according to Minister of Education,Zach LaVine UCLA Jersey, Priya Manickchand, “We hope that their enthusiasm and commitment to supporting literacy in Guyana will inspire others to become partners with the ministry in further advancing literacy in Guyana.”This move comes even as the Ministry seeks to ensure that each child is equipped with the requisite literacy skills to lead a better life. Moreover, Ministry officials are hopeful that the sustained stimulated actions in the days, months and years to follow will really get the nation enthusiastically reading again.According to the Ministry tomorrow (September 9), the entire population is being invited to participate in the “Give a Book Campaign 2013.” This campaign, the Ministry in a statement explained, is being organized with the goal of raising awareness of the importance of reading, primarily among young people.“The Ministry encourages all Guyanese throughout all 10 administrative regions to give a book to someone else and to persuade them to read.”“Regardless of the age, content or format of the book, all are being asked to give a book to someone else so as to support the Ministry in encouraging reading and literacy nationwide,” the statement added.The Ministry will be joining members of the private sector in the distribution of books on Monday.  Added to this, the Ministry will be erecting tents in front of its main administrative offices in Brickdam, Stabroek, Georgetown,Tim Duncan College Jersey, where there will distribution of free books.Further, the Ministry will be using a mobile unit to distribute books around the country, and will be placing several tents around Georgetown – at the Staborek Market Square, outside of Parliament Buildings, and in the compound of the National Library – where persons can uplift one free book, compliments of the Ministry.And it was in recognition of the fact that reading is fundamental to function in today’s society that the idea of the “Drop Everything and Read” campaign was crystallized. According to the Ministry reading is not only important because it develops the mind but it also exposes a person to new experiences that could prove to be very stimulating for the brain.“Reading books provide the individual with the necessary repose from the rigors of everyday life and affects their health in positive ways. With that in mind, the Ministry urges all Guyanese to also participate in the “Drop Everything and Read” campaign which is to begin on Monday at 11:00h,” the statement adds.The Ministry is therefore proposing that the entire Guyana “experiences a beautiful interlude on Monday…to stop whatever they are doing and read something for 15 minutes.”Persons are encouraged to read something/anything at this designated time. The entire media corps, according to the Ministry,Kyle Lowry Villanova Jersey, has promised to embrace the campaign in order to help make it a success.In this regard media houses responsible for electronic media will be pausing their regular programming for 15 minutes to broadcast reading programmes.Minister Manickchand,Kemba Walker Uconn Jersey, in expressing appreciation for the support noted, “We at the Ministry are happy to have the support of the media in assisting us in advancing our literacy drive.”She has requested of the operators of television stations to interrupt their regular programming to show a variety of scrolling texts which viewers are encouraged to read for 15 minutes.And in the case of radio, a number of creative methods have been decided upon so as to significantly highlight the importance of reading.  In some instances it is expected that children will be reading a variety of texts while on air.The Ministry is urging that all Guyanese even after the campaigns would have concluded,Matt Leinart College Jersey, that they encourage and support each other as it relates to reading.This move is being encouraged in the hope that individuals,Taylor Mays College Jersey, particularly the young population,Reggie Miller UCLA Jersey, would become more confident in making independent choices in their reading materials.According to the Ministry developing as a reader is linked to positive attitudes, experiences and skills.
