Even as Valentine’s Day was being observed yesterday,Denard Span Giants Jersey, a wide cross-section of the country’s secondary school students were busy exploring career options at the University of Guyana’s (UG) 2014 Open/Career Day.Almost 40 organisations, within both the public and private sectors, collaborated with the University to host the event at the University’s Turkeyen campus. Representatives of the participating companies also graced that forum.Speaking at the start of the signature event,San Diego State Aztecs Jerseys, Coordinator of School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Linda Johnson- Bhola noted that UG is a tertiary institution that embodies the hope of Guyana’s future. She added that despite being faced with limited resources, the Turkeyen Campus is “is well on its way to doing that…”In addition to the various organisations highlighting their work, she disclosed that the event yesterday was also designed to amplify what each Faculty of the University is capable of doing to prepare students for the world of work. “This is a wonderful moment of celebration for us; it is not just a celebration of just another open-career day…it is a unique one, one that coincides with 50 years of the existence of the University of Guyana,” added Johnson-Bhola.Moreover, she underscored that the University has a role to expand its relationship with the wider society, including the young, old, and public and private organisations too. “Today’s event is a reflection of who we are, what we do and where we are going,” asserted the University’s Coordinator.Public Relations Officer of the University, Ms Paulette Paul, in delivering welcoming remarks, underscored that the Open/Career day is one that can help them to answer questions students may need answers to. Moreover,Willson Contreras Cubs Jersey, she urged those in attendance to “take full opportunity of their time,” at the event.Supporting Paul’s deliberation was Deputy Vice Chancellor,Green Bay Packers Jersey UK, Phillip Da Silva, who made a point of emphasising that the University could help the attending students to make the appropriate career choices. He however noted that while there will be challenges along the way, even in the work place, “the question about how to confront those challenges will say something about your character, your ability and the quality of education you receive, especially here at the University of Guyana or wherever you choose to complete your education.”Da Silva also advised the students to always ensure that they remain engaged in something valuable. “Do something that genuinely help others and make it worth the effort used…in this way you can have a happy and fulfilled life,” added the Deputy Vice Chancellor. He further expressed optimism that the students’ choices would in fact help to “wheel our nation in a positive light.”Delivering remarks yesterday too was the University’s 2013 Valedictorian, Eileen Murray, who cautioned the students that their academic journey is only now beginning. |
