I recognized that chair, and it was in the family for over fifty years.The thing that struck me on my recent visit to Guyana is how some Guyanese believe that other people’s property is theirs to steal if the owner is not around. Of course you have different categories of thieves in Guyana, and I am just starting with the petty ones at the bottom and work my way to the top.My thoughts went back to security and stealing in Guyana because of an incident this week at my home in Orlando, Florida. It’s the norm in the community where I live.One afternoon this past week I heard the wife screaming. I looked up and saw her pointing in the direction of my bedroom window. Suffice it to say it was the seat of Government when Berbice was a separate Country. As an aside, here in the United States the culture is to preserve historic buildings, in Guyana the culture is one of destroying historic edifices.If it wasn’t bad enough that they stole the hospital, further down the road on the way to Stanleytown is the New Amsterdam cemetery. In the cemetery there is a little building which serves as a chapel for the final rites of the dead. You may not believe this but half of the roof of the chapel was relieved of the zinc sheets.Imagine stealing from a facility that provided for the sick, now stealing from the dead. Are there no limits to which some Guyanese will stop at stealing?Most of the above can be regarded as just the small stuff. We have the armed bandits who carry out daring daylight robberies.
