By Ralph Seeram“Ah jus put de mat fuh sun on the porch and deh gone with it,Le Veon Bell Steelers Jersey, nat even ah hour”, lamented my relative as she was bringing in her rocking chair from her small enclosed porch located on the ground level of the her home a few feet away from the street.I was questioning her wisdom of moving her rocking chair back and forth from the porch rather than leaving it outside. She had good reason to protect her rocking chair. I recognized that chair, and it was in the family for over fifty years. The thing that struck me on my recent visit to Guyana is how some Guyanese believe that other people’s property is theirs to steal if the owner is not around. Of course you have different categories of thieves in Guyana, and I am just starting with the petty ones at the bottom and work my way to the top.My thoughts went back to security and stealing in Guyana because of an incident this week at my home in Orlando, Florida. My yard is unfenced and I would sometimes leave my garage door open,Jack Ham Steelers Jersey, even though I have expensive stuff in there. It’s the norm in the community where I live. One afternoon this past week I heard the wife screaming. I looked up and saw her pointing in the direction of my bedroom window. There peeping in my bedroom window was a huge, at least three hundred pounds, Florida Black Bear. This magnificent creature was just staring in my window, and if it were not for a screen mesh he or she would have certainly poked its head inside. The problem is you can’t touch the bear. It is a protected species so you have to call Animal Services to capture it,Mel Blount Steelers Jersey, and their normal response is “Did it attack anyone?” If the answer is no they just tell you to leave it alone.Where am I going with this, and what relevance is it to stealing in Guyana? Well like my relative in Guyana I now have to lock up, secure the house from a different kind of thief, black bears who have been noted to enter homes in search of human food. By the way it is a criminal offence to feed them.During my visit to my hometown, New Amsterdam, I accompanied my daughter to a school for the handicapped in Vryman’s Erven in New Amsterdam to ascertain what assistance her foundation- Giving Abundantly In Life – could render. We observed that there were skeletons of playground equipment lying in the grass, unusable, so we inquired what happened to the chains and other metal parts of the equipment. The Director replied, “They thief them,Logan Ryan Patriots Jersey, and is people just nearby”. Good Lord playground equipment for handicapped children and people just decided to steal them.Driving down Main Street I saw some concrete uprights of what was once an architectural masterpiece – the New Amsterdam Hospital. The hospital had stretched from Main Street to Water Street, probably a little less than a quarter of a mile. Believe it or not, folks in the Diaspora, they stole the entire hospital.Bit by bit, piece by piece they dismantled the wood, boards and roof of the entire structure. To steal an entire hospital must be a record on the planet. I must admit that it would be very hard for me to forgive the PPP Government for allowing the destruction of that historic edifice, just as I cannot forgive the PNC Government for destroying another historic building, the old High Court building, to build the present court structure. That building is a story for another day. Suffice it to say it was the seat of Government when Berbice was a separate Country. As an aside, here in the United States the culture is to preserve historic buildings, in Guyana the culture is one of destroying historic edifices. If it wasn’t bad enough that they stole the hospital, further down the road on the way to Stanleytown is the New Amsterdam cemetery. In the cemetery there is a little building which serves as a chapel for the final rites of the dead. You may not believe this but half of the roof of the chapel was relieved of the zinc sheets.Imagine stealing from a facility that provided for the sick, now stealing from the dead. Are there no limits to which some Guyanese will stop at stealing? Most of the above can be regarded as just the small stuff. We have the armed bandits who carry out daring daylight robberies. The trend now seems to be gold miners,Jack Lambert Steelers Jersey, though recently some found out the hard way that it was not that easy. This reminds me of an old but true story I heard. A career bank robber was asked why he robbed banks. He replied, “That’s where the money is”. Seems logical why miners are the target of thieves. That’s where the gold is– already mined at that.No story about ‘thiefing’ in Guyana would be complete without mentioning what some regard as the ‘biggest thieves in the country’. Of course, we are talking here of politicians,Greg Lloyd Steelers Jersey, some of whom have become very wealthy ‘overnight’.Enough has been said by Kaieteur News about that aspect of thievery, especially in the ‘Dem Boys Seh’ column.Last week, the AFC and PNC or APNU (which is it? I get confused separating one from the other) accused President Jagdeo of ‘stealing’ their Television time by closing down Sharma TV station, just as the opposition was ‘working up a sweat’ about Jagdeo “stealing” their TV time.Jagdeo, the ever astute politician, “pulled the rug from under their feet”. The opposition is quiet now. They got more press when the station was closed than they will ever get when Sharma’s station is on the air.Speaking about thieving politicians,Jared Cook Packers Jersey, even the political parties are now engaged in stealing from each other. The PPP “thief” two people from the PNC,Matt Ryan Falcons Jersey, the AFC “thief” two also, one from the PPP and the other from the PNC. Poor PNC,Mike Mitchell Steelers Jersey, after 19 years in the wilderness it would seem that they have lost the art of stealing.Ralph Seeram can be reached at email: [email protected] |
