Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, yesterday remanded two businessmen, Dion Coates of 890 Fifth Avenue Diamond, East Bank Demerara, and Beterverwagting business owner Ronald Singh, to prison. The two are facing separate counts of being in the possession of firearms and ammunition, without being licensed firearm holders. Coates, however, also faced another charge for possession of narcotics.It was alleged that on February 6, last, at Singh’s Auto Mechanic shop, located at lot 9 Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, the police found one .45 Colt Pistol, and seven rounds of .45 ammunition.Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant,Arcenio Leon Venezuela Jersey, told the court that, the police,Gregory Infante Venezuela Jersey, while acting on information went to Singh’s business place and found the gun and live rounds. The police then questioned Singh and found out that he was not a licensed firearm holder. In his request for bail, Kissoon told the court that Singh is the father of eight, and his spouse is currently pregnant with his ninth child. He added that Singh has a heart condition and renal failure that causes him to require dialysis.Kissoon said that his client was not present when the firearm was found, and that he was subsequently hauled into a room in which he was told the firearm was found. In addition, Kissoon claimed that the room in which the firearm was found was the public waiting area of Singh’s business place,Salvador Perez Venezuela Jersey, which is accessible to all 13 of his employees and his clients.Kissoon then said that if the police can produce a written statement of admission from his client, he would withdraw his application for bail.Inspector Grant then told the court that the police had contacted Singh, telling him why they were at his house and Singh invited them in.
