World Sight Day (WSD) is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. This year is the fourth year of the World Health Organization’sSecond year Optometry students. In Guyana, students of the Optometry programme at the University of Guyana offered free screening and eye testing to interested persons on campus. They were also tasked with bringing awareness to the general public about ocular ailments.Four students, Chhandanie Khairu, Francine Barker,Terrelle Pryor Ohio State Jersey, Rodella Summer and Hema Persaud, were assigned the responsibility of raising public awareness on digital Eye Strain.The group during an interview with Kaieteur News discussed the signs and symptoms and some precautionary measures persons can take against digital eye strain.Khairu explained that Digital Eye Strain is the physical discomfort felt after prolonged exposure to digital screens. She added that it is associated with the close to mid-range distance of digital screens,Adrian Clayborn Iowa Jersey, including desktop and laptop computers,North Carolina Jerseys, tablets, e-readers and cell phones.Khairu noted that it is not uncommon to start experiencing symptoms after spending two or more hours staring at one or multiple digital devices.Barker said that nearly nine out of 10 adults, roughly 88 percent, spend more than two hours each day using a digital device, with one in 10 people spending at least three-fourths of their waking hours on a digital device.The Optometry student said that this constant exposure to technology is a shock to the human eyes with 65 percent of persons reporting symptoms of digital eye strain. Barker said that symptoms of digital eye strain can range from dry/irritated eyes, blurred vision, eye fatigue, neck and back pain and headaches.Barker added that on average, 75% of persons who use two or more devices simultaneously report experiencing symptoms of eye strain. When working in text editors or viewing online materials, use the keyboard shortcut to magnify text (ctrl “+”) as needed.Always magnify to a size that feels comfortable. If you have to move your head closer to the screen, squint, or don’t feel relaxed while reading — the text is still too small.Read offline: Summer explained that intense reading on computer monitors is not ideal for productivity because eventually your eyes will tire out. When you come across a long article or document, print it out in large-enough print. Then read it at your own pace and in the right lighting.A survey was conducted at the University of Guyana among 50 students to investigate the average population affected by digital eyestrain. The study showed that students spend an estimate of nine hours using digital devices to browse the internet, social media activities, entertainment and research.Approximately 285 million people worldwide live with low vision and blindness,Iowa Hawkeyes Jerseys, of these, 39 million people are blind and 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment. Most of the blind people live in low-income countries, yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable.Restorations of sight and blindness prevention strategies are among the most cost-effective interventions in health care.
