The organisation also campaigns to change attitudes and improve services.One of those working hard to change attitudes is Rennata Ifill,Maurice Clarett Ohio State Jersey, who was born with short arms.She has been busy the past two days trying to train other differently-able youths to go into their different communities and work with others like themselves who have a disability.  The group consists of youths who are deaf, blind and who have other physical disabilities, such as those unable to walk.She said the youths are a good support system for others.Rennata works as a Call Centre agent and says she had no difficulty getting the job. She now lives in Georgetown,Robert Nkemdiche Ole Miss Jersey, but attended Abrams Zuil Secondary School on the Essequibo Coast.Attending school, Rennata faced some of the same teasing other differently-able children face. Once, she had to take drastic action and get into a physical fight to prove that those with disabilities are not retarded and can do most things a so called “normal” person can do.After secondary school, she moved on to pursue a Diploma in Social Work at the University of Guyana, and has plans to pursue a degree. Her short arms have not by any means been a hindrance to her life.“I don’t know the reason why I was born with short arms, but I do know though that I am here for a purpose; people with disability can have a life,” she asserts.She said that youths with disabilities face many challenges,Terrelle Pryor Ohio State Jersey, including being discriminated against. While she did not have a problem securing a job because of her disability, she said many disabled youths face this problem.A capacity- building workshop was held over the past two days at Red House in Georgetown to help youths with disabilities support those in their respective communities. She said some might be qualified for a job, but are told plainly that they would not be able to perform because of their disability. She said this must stop, and so there is a need for more awareness about disabled persons.As a result, she said Young Voices in Guyana aims to help in the process.Working with its London-based parent, Young Voices Guyana’s programmes are backed up by Leonard Cheshire Disability’s research centre.The Centre is run jointly with University College London, which helps to share good practice and innovations in the area of disability and development.
