This is her second visit during the course of the programme and she is expected to make at least two more visits before the trade fair in January 2011.The nine companies/groups selected for the programme are Amazon Authentics, Wifi Handcrafted Leather, Liana Cane, Summersons Furniture, Arawak Leather Craft, Rainforest Pottery, Macushi Embroideries, the Wai Wai Community and Rupununi Weavers.Williams pointed out that not only is the project gender-biased it also targets indigenous and depressed communities as well. Despite that being the case, the participants were not lightly chosen on just those merits. According to the GMSA executive, there was a rigorous process of evaluation to decide which companies would have been best suited for the venture.Patty Johnson stated that they considered the range of products that represent those on the Guyanese market – wood, natural fibres, and so forth. Willingness to take the design suggestions offered and to engage fully in the programme, as well as the ability to collaborate creatively with other businesses, were some of the factors that were assessed in choosing the businesses which are currently participating in the exercise.Williams noted that the ultimate objective of the programme was that the companies/groups would perhaps realize the market access potential and be exposed to possible joint venture opportunities. According to Johnson, the Trade Fair is frequented by Interior Designers from across Canada as well as American designers from the West Coast cities as well.The intent being that the Guyanese companies would not be there ‘selling handicraft’ but would be presenting their goods with the intent of making wholesaling relationships with the design, decorating and architectural firms and representatives present at the trade fair.
