The family of 46-year-old Daniel Sai Persaud, who was killed on the Nismes Public Road, West Bank Demerara just over two weeks ago following a hit-and-run accident, is hoping that justice will prevail and that the perpetrator will be brought to justice.Persaud, a father of three,World Baseball Classic Jerseys, met his demise while returning to his Nismes home from a wedding house in the neighbouring community of Sisters Village.According to the dead man’s eldest son, Takechand Persaud, he was told that on the day of the incident at around 02:30 hours his father was pushing his bicycle heading home when he was struck down.Takechand, who was in the company of his grandfather, Haripersaud, yesterday informed this newspaper that it was about 15 minutes after the mishap that he was alerted of the fact that his father was at the Nismes dispensary. On his arrival there the young man said that he was confronted by police officers who related that his father had succumbed and that there were no eyewitnesses to the accident. He said that he was further advised to visit the LaGrange Police Station to give a statement later that morning.Accompanied by his grandfather, Takechand said that they arrived at the station at around 07:00 hours and waited for about half an hour before either of them were allowed to give a statement. He said that an officer in charge of the investigation had also related that they had a suspect in custody and had impounded a jeep believed to have been involved in the accident.Takechand disclosed that he was informed that the vehicle was impounded because of the fact that the front bumper was damaged as were the front lights, coupled with the discovery of what appeared to be blood in the frontal area. The young man said that the officer had told him that a test would be carried out to determine whether it was his father’s blood on the vehicle. But according to Takechand, his family’s concern about the police investigation into the matter was aroused when the suspect was released from lawful custody as well as the vehicle.Additionally, he related that when he or any other member of the Persaud family attempts to inquire about the case they are told to do so later, a development which, according to Takechand, is only serving to frustrate his family.According to Takechand, his father was an honest man who up until his demise was a hardworking employee of the Guyana Sugar Corporation’s Wales Estate where he worked for more than 10 years, thus the need to see justice be served for his father’s death. In an invited comment yesterday, an officer at the LaGrange Police Station related to this newspaper that while the dead man’s family may be frustrated, hit-and-run cases normally take some time before they are solved, especially when there are no eyewitnesses to assist the process. The officer explained that contrary to the family’s belief, investigations are still ongoing and the tests which were aided by the substance found on the vehicle are still being processed at the CID headquarters. The officer further expounded that unless there is hard evidence, the police force has no authority to keep anyone or their property in custody, even as he assured that the force is intent on seeing justice served as well. |
